This year our annual school trip took us to the Italian island, Sicily, from 16 – 22 November. The group was made up of students from KS3, KS4 and KS5, Years 7-13.

On the first day, we visited Monreale, a town where the famous Duomo Cathedral was built in the twelfth century. We were in awe of the beautiful medieval mosaics inside the Cathedral.Ìý Next, we walked through the main street of Palermo, looking at the monuments, the Theatro Massimo and the Fontana Pretoria.

The following day we travelled to Corleone, the place considered to be the original home of the Mafia. There we went to a museum and learnt about the horrible ways of the Mafia. We all felt sorry for the people who lived there. Afterwards, we visited Villa Del Kasale, an ancient Roman villa, the floors of which are covered in frescoes.

Our next destination was Mount Etna where we climbed into the crater and enjoyed the snow, as well as a view of the sea. Then we were taken to Taormina, to a Greek amphitheatre which also had a panoramic view.

We went to Catania the next day, saw the Cathedral of St Agatha and walked through Elephant Square…and we had some free time to go shopping.

In Syracuse on our last day, we saw Roman aqueducts and realised how ahead of their time the Romans were in their engineering skills. We also learnt what war was like in the olden times and about the sieges of Syracuse. The tour ended with a visit to another amphitheatre carved out of a giant rock.

On June 3rd, BIS students and teachers began their journey to Zlatibor. The students were extremely excited that the day for the trip had finally come after much anticipation.

Mid way through the journey, the students stopped off at Norwegian House to learn about the connections between the Serbian and Norwegian peoples in World War Two. Once we arrived in Zlatibor, we checked into Hotel Mona and the students settled into their rooms. Before long, we were enjoying the beautiful swimming pool and jacuzzis. The day ended with a lovely meal and free time for the students.

For our first full day in Zlatibor, we made the journey to the beautiful Stopica caves. After a short hike, everyone was amazed at how wonderful they were and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Next, we visited Sirogojno village – the only open air museum in Serbia –which was ironic as it was raining! Once we’d dried off, the students did one of their favourite activities, buying souvenirs, once again despite the rain! Upon returning to the hotel, we went for another swim before dinner and then a walk around the lake. We ‘accidentally’ bought chocolate donuts for everyone as we walked around the lake and heard/saw some very noisy frogs!

Our third day was extremely action packed. First, we visited the Dino Park where we enjoyed looking at the full scale models of a variety of dinosaurs and also got the chance to buy more souvenirs. After this, we enjoyed ice creams which were a treat from Miss Keserovic. In the afternoon, we drove by coach to visit Drvengrad and explore the traditional buildings there as well as watching a film. Our next stop was the nearby Sargan railway where we all thoroughly enjoyed riding the special train which was quite an adventure! However, the long day was not quite over as it was disco time… To celebrate our last night, everyone got dressed up and had a dance to the specially prepared karaoke. Everyone was especially impressed by Mrs Howie and Mrs Copeland who led the dancing and encouraged even more people to dance than usual. It was the perfect end to our last evening. ÌýExhausted after our long fun filled day, everyone fell quickly to sleep.

The final day had arguably the best excursion, the Adventure Park! Students (and staff) were extremely excited to try the different zip line activities. After they were all equipped and given training, everyone was off! The students tried increasingly hard challenges and had an absolutely amazing time. Many faced their fears and were the better for it. Without a doubt, the teachers were extremely proud of the student’s mature attitude, excellent behaviour and courage in trying something new and challenging. Once we had finally finished there and managed to get everyone down from the trees, we enjoyed our final lunch and then had the long journey back to Belgrade leaving some amazing memories behind.

This was a beneficial trip for the students’ education, social skills development and their general independence. Indeed, it was one of the most exciting and interesting trips in recent years and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Despite being caught a few times, we were also very lucky with the weather. The student’s behaviour was excellent throughout and even their rooms were amazingly tidy. They should be really proud of themselves. Well done to all!

On June 4th, BIS students and teachers began their journey to central Serbia and the wonderful and peaceful spa town of Vrnjacka Banja. Happiness and excitement could be seen on the students’ faces as they eagerly boarded the coach and waved goodbye to their parents.

After a short ride, the group arrived to Svilajnac, a town in central Serbia where everyone enjoyed the guided tour of Dinosville, the permanent exhibition in the Natural History Center of Serbia. The breathtaking sight of the Jurassic scenery, the lifelike figures of dinosaurs and a gigantic replica of an erupting volcano amazed everyone and called for numerous photographs to be taken. Some of the students were able to learn about the Earth’s crust and volcanoes, while for others this created an opportunity to revise their science knowledge. After Dinosville, the students toured the Natural History Centre where they were able to see how the living things evolved since the beginning of life on Earth, the evolution of human beings and communities as well as huge dinosaur skeleton replicas and an exhibition about the original human settlements on Danube in the east of Serbia. After the tour, the student had lunch in the Dinosville restaurant, and enjoyed the dinosaur shaped desert.

After a pleasant ride on the couch the group arrived to Vrnjacka Banja and checked in at the Hotel Zepter. Everyone was extremely pleased with the accommodation and the immediate proximity of the town’s pedestrian area for which it is well known.

On the first day in Vrnjacka Banja, the students visited the Belimarkovic castle, an endowment of a nineteen century Serbian general and the second oldest building in Vrnjacka banja, where they could see the nineteen century furniture and learn about the way of life at that time.Ìý After the visit, the students enjoyed some free time, the dinner which pleased everyone and a play time on a nearby playground.

The second day in Vrnjacka Banja was reserved for sightseeing, a wonderful train ride through town, shopping and swimming in the hotel’s swimming pool. The students could hear the story about the ‘Bridge of Love’ and why the tradition is to put padlocks on the bridge. Also, the group visited three thermal sources of mineral water this town is famous for and were able try some of it. Everyone seemed to enjoy the visit to the Japanese Garden in the center of Banja, a place of serenity and peace. The students loved the big wooden Japanese gazebo and the waterfall immediately next to it. In the afternoon, the students did their shopping and played with the most popular shopping item ‘the squishy’ and had ice-cream. Soon after, everyone enjoyed a fun swim in the wonderful swimming pool at the hotel.

On the third day, the group set off to the Goc Mountain where they had an adventurous hike, a visit to Lake Goc and a traditional lunch. Later that day, the group had a sports day and a fun run as a part of the Global Running Day. The vast greenery and an abundance of fresh air as well as the beautiful sights of the Mountain cheered everyone. The story of the Goc Lake monster, and the beautiful lake captured the students’ attention and startled their imagination. The sightseeing was followed by a lunch in a restaurant on the Mountain. The students enjoyed a traditional Serbian lunch and desert which gave them energy for the sports day competition, the fun run at the Vrnjacka Banja stadium and a swimming session at the hotel. After this, the most popular event was held- the disco party! The students showed off some incredible dance moves and enjoyed the casual atmosphere.

On the last day in Vrnjacka Banja, the group had another shopping session and immediately after lunch everyone set off to Kragujevac, our final stop before returning home to Belgrade. In Kragujevac, a large town in Central Serbia, the group visited a Memorial Park Sumarice, where they learned about the tragic consequences of the Second World War in Serbia, and had a panoramic tour of the monuments to the victims from that time. After seeing this historical site, the students visited the aquarium at the Faculty of Science in Kragujevac where they were able to see different kinds of fishes, amphibians and reptiles. After this visit, everyone boarded the bus once again and began their trip back to Belgrade.

All the students were very happy with the trip and they provided some quality pieces of writing about the school trip the following day in the Friday’s Assembly at school.

This was a beneficial trip for the students’ education, social skills development and their general independence.

Another amazing school trip is over. We returned from Scandinavia tired, but with a feeling that it was truly a trip of a lifetime and one we will never forget.

We landed in Stockholm, the Swedish capital, which spreads on 14 islands connected with more than 50 bridges; the place where the large lake Malaren meets the Baltic Sea. We visited: the City Hall, the artistic quarter, Nobel’s house, a modern part of the city called Norrmalm, and DjurgÃ¥rden island. We also visited the Vasa Museum, where we admired a royal warship that had sunk in the 17th century. The boat is fantastically preserved, with more than 98% of the original structure and is a cultural and artistic treasure of Sweden. In the afternoon we strolled through Gamla Stan – the oldest part of Stockholm, and admired the magnificent building of the Royal Palace. We also climbed the 130 metre high lookout Globen Sky view.

The next day we went by bus to Oslo, through amazing landscapes of Sweden and Norway, the region of lakes and coniferous forests, in addition to the small Nordic villages, mostly made of wood. On our way to Oslo, we stopped at Karlstadt, a picturesque town nestled in one of Sweden’s largest lake, Vanern. ÌýUpon our arrival, we had a memorable evening and dinner at Hard Rock Café in Oslo.

Oslo is situated at the end of more than 100 kilometres long fjord. We visited the main business and shopping street of the city “Karl Johan gate”, Akershus fortress, the Royal Palace and the University. Then we went to Viking Ship Museum and Fram Museum – where we explored the largest wooden ship ever built, and found out how the crew managed to survive in the coldest and most dangerous places on Earth – the Arctic and Antarctic. We also visited Vigeland Park, where more than two hundred Gustav Vigeland’s sculptures are displayed as his donation to Oslo.

The next night was the most exciting for all of us – the night on a ferry, a big cruising ship with 9 platforms, swimming pools and Jacuzzis, restaurants and shops.

Next morning we woke up in Copenhagen – “Port of Retailers”, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. We visited Christiansburg Palace which now houses the Danish Parliament, the City Hall (Københavns RÃ¥dhus), the National Museum, the Danish Royal theatre, beautiful Amelienborg Palace (winter residence of the Danish Royal family), the famous sculpture “the Little Mermaid”, the port district Nuhavn with old colourful buildings and sailing ships. In addition, we enjoyed a one-hour boat tour around canals of Copenhagen. On the last day we went to Malmö across the famous Øresund Bridge.

So many new places, so many memories, and new friendships made. We enjoyed every minute of this fabulous trip.

Here are the impressions of our students:

Our school trip to Scandinavia was so much fun in many different ways this year. We went to Sweden, Norway and Denmark and visited their capitals: Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen. I really enjoyed Sweden and Denmark.

We were very lucky with getting just a little bit of rain in the middle of the trip. This was my first trip with the school and it was extraordinary. We looked at many monumental places, learned about their history and got to have a lot of fun. The trip got some students to meet and know each other, which is great if you are new.

The best part of the trip was when Matilde, Annabella and I went to a shop full of onesies. We got to try them out and wear them around the store.

Overall, I think that it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it for other students.

Erika, Y9

Ìý

This year’s school trip was to the Scandinavia countries.

In Stockholm we visited the Vasa museum – with a 98% original 17th century warship – and roamed the streets of Gamla Stan.

In Oslo we experienced a breath-taking panoramic view of the city, as well as visiting Vigeland Park, which was overflow with sculptures.

Finally, in Copenhagen, we took a boating tour through the beautiful city, passing next to the ‘Little Mermaid’.

It was a wonderful trip, where many memories were made and lots of hot dogs were eaten.

Milica Y11

I really loved that we could go to three different places in 5 days.

The Vasa Museum in Scandinavia was also very interesting because we could see a ship which has been underwater for 400 years.

The cruise ship was also a highlight of the trip because personally I never went on a cruiseÌýbefore so I was so excited to go.

Every day, we got time to go to shop and buy stuff that we wanted to bring back home.

The food and the hotels were indescribable! The beds were comfortable and best of all; I was with my friends the whole way through.

Nikola Y8

The trip was incredible! I absolutely loved the Vasa museum… So much detail and the giant ship was even more amazing!

Going to Hard Rock Café in Oslo for dinner was also quite cool. Seeing all the guitars, buying in the shop opened just for us. It was incredible.

The ferry boat was also a wondrous experience.Ìý Also, Mrs Nada always picks the best hotels ÌýJ.

The only unfortunate thing for me was the duration of the trip. I think a week would’ve been perfect.

Luka Y8

Ìý

It was one of the best trips that I have ever been to. My favourite day was the first one, because it was the longest one, and we went to the best museum ever: the Vasa Museum. But the third day was just as good because we went to the ferry boat from Oslo to Copenhagen and we were all sleeping on bunk beds and spent time together.

The shopping was very cool and fun; Copenhagen was full of shops and malls. I bought a lot of stuff for my little sister and new basketball shoes for me: KD9’s. The only thing that I disliked was the number of days, we were there for only 5 days, but doesn’t matter, I loved it anyways.

Filip, Y8

The trip was fascinating. We had a lot of fun. The food there was amazing, especially the hot dogs. We got to see a lot of sights and visited many beautiful historical places.

Darina Y11

The trip was incredibly interesting. We got an amazing opportunity to visit many beautiful places. The food there was amazing. I especially liked the hot dogs. The teachers were very understanding and helpful. I really liked the trip

Anastasia Y11

The trip was sooo nice. I liked sleeping on the ferry; I loved visiting Stockholm by boat. The tour with the bus was a very good idea; all the places we visited were very interesting. I loved wandering with my friends in the pedestrian zone, shopping things. The food that we ate was very good. There was just one thing that sadly was closed, the Tivoli Park.

Matilde, Y9

Ìý

On the school trip we saw lots of different monuments. We were always moving, which was pretty exhausting, but that made it much more enjoyable to rest on the bus. I liked how we got out and moved around but I felt some of us spent too much on shopping. Overall, the trip was enjoyable and I will most likely go on the school trip next year.

Eva Y9

Ìý

This year we went to Scandinavia with school. We had a great time and saw a lot of new places. We visited Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen and we all really liked those cities. We will never forget this school trip.

Ana Y11

Ìý

This year’s study tour to Scandinavia was amazing. We visited lots of historical sites and made lots of new friends. I cannot wait for the next year’s trip.
