We are proud to announce that, following the announcement from the Serbian Educational Ministry, the BIS will open its doors to students from Monday, 31 August.

In addition to classroom learning, there will also be an option of online learning for those students whose families would still prefer to keep them at home. The BIS is prepared to provide a safe environment for all the students attending school by ensuring social distancing during the lessons, as well as during break times.

Students and staff will be required to wear face masks and all the required hygiene measures will be in place. We wish all our students, staff and parents a happy and healthy start of the 2020-21 school year.

The BIS has recently said good-bye to the 23rd generation of its graduating students. For the first time in the school’s history, the celebration took place in open air, at the BIS Primary school yard in Uzicka 7a. Luckily, the weather was on our side and  everyone was able to enjoy the beautiful summer evening. We are proud to announce once again that one of this year’s BIS graduates, Ana S., has been accepted by Cambridge University to study Civil Engineering. Like in the previous years, the most successful students in the graduating class of 2020, as well as some of the Primary Year 6 students, received international and internal awards in recognition of their academic achievement. The student awards from the Council of ÌÇÐÄÔ´´s (COBIS) were given to Ana S. in Year 13 and Luka V. in Year 6. The student award from the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) was given to Dragomir B. in Year 13. The internal Jonathan Rider Award for Academic Excellence was given to several Primary and Secondary students. The official ceremony was followed by a cocktail party with delicious food, drinks and music.

We wish the graduating class of 2020 all the best for their future education.

Dear Parent/ Guardians,

Since the confirmation of cases of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) in Serbia and the actions of governments across Europe with regard to school closures, a lot of parents have been asking about our ongoing plans to manage the situation. We have now drawn up a set of contingency plans aimed at minimising the spread of infection, while still providing the best possible education to our students. Please find below our contingency plans for possible cases of Covid-19 at school and our plans for continued educational provision for students.

All of the above actions will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. School will also act in accordance with Serbian government guidance and implement the above procedures in line with regulations as set out at government level.

In the case of office staff, any secondary school closure will also close the school office. The office will then operate remotely only. We will contact parents to arrange for any due payments to be made either remotely or to be delayed until an agreed date.

Thank you all for your co-operation and understanding so far. If you have any questions or concerns about our plans, please contact Mr. Wade or Ms. Keserovic by email or telephone.

Yours Faithfully,

Ms. A Keserovic
School Principal

Five students from the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ Model United Nations Club (BISMUN Club) attended The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) early this year. Their participation in this conference allowed them to develop their understanding of diplomacy, international relations and the inner workings of the UN. They tackled complex geopolitical issues such as force-feeding girls in South Africa, tackling Jihad, social media corporations and their data privacy policies, etc.

Participating at the THIMUN with over 3000 delegates helped the BISMUN Club students to practice their public speaking, debating skills and their understanding of technical legal language. Working at the conference with 150 nationalities the BISMUN Club students encountered an internationally diverse environment and made connections with people from all around the globe.

THIMUN took place at the International Forum in Hague where many world leaders have spoken and made important geopolitical agreements. By being there the BISMUN Club students were able to experience the same formality and prestige as experienced by many high-level diplomats and world leaders.

In their free time, the BISMUN Club had the chance to visit two universities in Amsterdam, multiple museums and observe a trial at the International Mechanisms for Criminal Tribunals.

The trip gave our students a uniquely practical experience to put into practice what would otherwise be taught in the classrooms. For more information about the activities of the BISMUN club, you can follow them on Instagram @bismunclub.

We are proud to announce that the BIS Y13 student Ana S applied and was accepted to Cambridge University, Department of Engineering.

After a rigorous 2- part written test in Mathematics and Physics, Ana was invited for an interview and answered all the questions related to Physics in front of two independent examination committees. Several weeks ago Ana received a positive reply, informing her that she was accepted to the programme of studies in Engineering.

Ana is working hard towards her A level examinations, as she needs to complete 6 full A levels with outstanding grades. Well done Ana!

December 11th saw the entire Secondary school and a good number of parents, descend upon Cukarica Culture Centre for the Secondary Christmas show. This year our soloists, choir and language groups were joined by Key Stage 3 students with their Ridiculous Reality Cabaret.

Combining well-known songs, sketches, dances, physical theatre, rewritten popular tunes and an epic original composition by the one and only Milos, the cabaret took us through some of the more ridiculous experiences children encounter in their school day.

We then enjoyed a range of songs in no less than five different languages, some amazing solo musical performances, recitals in Serbian and show-stopping classics by Petra and Perina. We can’t wait for next Christmas to come around so that we can get some more!

After a lot of preparation and many weeks of hard work, on Thursday 5th December, the largest amount of Primary students in the history of BIS performed their annual production, ‘Mary Poppins.’ In our new venue the Vlada Divljan theatre, the audience was transported back in time to 1910 Edwardian London. Although nervous, the students were filled with excitement as the day of the production had finally come.

At 6 pm, it was time, the show started and what a show it was! This years’ performance was of an extremely high quality and included lovely singing, energetic dances and fantastic acting. The students and staff had all worked extremely hard to produce such a good production and it was enjoyed by all. Well done to everybody involved and thank you to the parents for their support.

This year our annual school trip took us to the Italian island, Sicily, from 16 – 22 November. The group was made up of students from KS3, KS4 and KS5, Years 7-13.

On the first day, we visited Monreale, a town where the famous Duomo Cathedral was built in the twelfth century. We were in awe of the beautiful medieval mosaics inside the Cathedral.  Next, we walked through the main street of Palermo, looking at the monuments, the Theatro Massimo and the Fontana Pretoria.

The following day we travelled to Corleone, the place considered to be the original home of the Mafia. There we went to a museum and learnt about the horrible ways of the Mafia. We all felt sorry for the people who lived there. Afterwards, we visited Villa Del Kasale, an ancient Roman villa, the floors of which are covered in frescoes.

Our next destination was Mount Etna where we climbed into the crater and enjoyed the snow, as well as a view of the sea. Then we were taken to Taormina, to a Greek amphitheatre which also had a panoramic view.

We went to Catania the next day, saw the Cathedral of St Agatha and walked through Elephant Square…and we had some free time to go shopping.

In Syracuse on our last day, we saw Roman aqueducts and realised how ahead of their time the Romans were in their engineering skills. We also learnt what war was like in the olden times and about the sieges of Syracuse. The tour ended with a visit to another amphitheatre carved out of a giant rock.
