On Friday, 14 June, the BIS said goodbye to the 22nd generation of its graduates. The celebration took place at the Vila Jelena Business Club and the guest of honour was H.E. Mr. Mochammad Chandra Widya Yudha, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Serbia.

Like every year, the graduation hats flew high up in the air just like our hopes and aspirations for these fine young people’s future. Together with H.E. Mochammad Chandra Widya Yudha, the Ambassador of Indonesia, the Principal of the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ in Belgrade, Ms Aleksandra Keserovic wished the graduates all the best in their future endeavors and reminded them of the words Meret Qui Laborat – success comes to he who works – this principle has led them in their education so far and will continue being the BIS motto in the future.

Besides the graduation certificates, special certificates such as the Student Award by Council of ÌÇÐÄÔ´´s (COBIS), European Council of International Schools (ECIS) Award and Jonathan Rider Academic Excellence Award, were presented to our outstanding students.

In Year 13 Damjan M was presented with the ECIS Award, Milica Dj with the COBIS Award, while Olga K was presented with the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´â€™s Jonathan Rider Academic Excellence Award.

Our Key Stage 3 students, Ingrid P (Year 9) and Andrea P (Year 9) both received the Jonathan Rider Academic Excellence Award, while in Key Stage 2, the COBIS Award went to Maria N (Year 6) and the Jonathan Rider Academic Excellence Award to Mila T (Year 6). The ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ once again congratulates its graduates and award winners.

On June 3rd, BIS students and teachers began their journey to Zlatibor. The students were extremely excited that the day for the trip had finally come after much anticipation.

Mid way through the journey, the students stopped off at Norwegian House to learn about the connections between the Serbian and Norwegian peoples in World War Two. Once we arrived in Zlatibor, we checked into Hotel Mona and the students settled into their rooms. Before long, we were enjoying the beautiful swimming pool and jacuzzis. The day ended with a lovely meal and free time for the students.

For our first full day in Zlatibor, we made the journey to the beautiful Stopica caves. After a short hike, everyone was amazed at how wonderful they were and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Next, we visited Sirogojno village – the only open air museum in Serbia –which was ironic as it was raining! Once we’d dried off, the students did one of their favourite activities, buying souvenirs, once again despite the rain! Upon returning to the hotel, we went for another swim before dinner and then a walk around the lake. We ‘accidentally’ bought chocolate donuts for everyone as we walked around the lake and heard/saw some very noisy frogs!

Our third day was extremely action packed. First, we visited the Dino Park where we enjoyed looking at the full scale models of a variety of dinosaurs and also got the chance to buy more souvenirs. After this, we enjoyed ice creams which were a treat from Miss Keserovic. In the afternoon, we drove by coach to visit Drvengrad and explore the traditional buildings there as well as watching a film. Our next stop was the nearby Sargan railway where we all thoroughly enjoyed riding the special train which was quite an adventure! However, the long day was not quite over as it was disco time… To celebrate our last night, everyone got dressed up and had a dance to the specially prepared karaoke. Everyone was especially impressed by Mrs Howie and Mrs Copeland who led the dancing and encouraged even more people to dance than usual. It was the perfect end to our last evening.  Exhausted after our long fun filled day, everyone fell quickly to sleep.

The final day had arguably the best excursion, the Adventure Park! Students (and staff) were extremely excited to try the different zip line activities. After they were all equipped and given training, everyone was off! The students tried increasingly hard challenges and had an absolutely amazing time. Many faced their fears and were the better for it. Without a doubt, the teachers were extremely proud of the student’s mature attitude, excellent behaviour and courage in trying something new and challenging. Once we had finally finished there and managed to get everyone down from the trees, we enjoyed our final lunch and then had the long journey back to Belgrade leaving some amazing memories behind.

This was a beneficial trip for the students’ education, social skills development and their general independence. Indeed, it was one of the most exciting and interesting trips in recent years and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Despite being caught a few times, we were also very lucky with the weather. The student’s behaviour was excellent throughout and even their rooms were amazingly tidy. They should be really proud of themselves. Well done to all!

On Monday 20th May the twenty four BIS students who had completed the Bronze and Silver levels of the Duke of York Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA) were presented with their certificates by HRH Crown Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic at the White Palace.

Special congratulations go to several of these students who have managed to achieve both the Bronze and the Silver level award.

The Ceremony represented one of the peak events in the life of our school community this year. It also reflected the true educational ethos of BIS, giving our students an opportunity to rejoice in their accomplishments.

We are most thankful to HRH Crown Prince Alexander and HRH Crown Princess Katherine for their hospitality. We are also thankful to the Ambassadors and First Secretaries of various countries posted to Serbia, as well as to a number guests who attended the Ceremony.

The evening began with a welcome speech from HRH Crown Prince Alexander. After that, Mr Howie introduced the audience to the concept of  iDEA award programme and the tasks our students needed to complete in order to achieve their Bronze and Silver awards. The students were then presented with their award certificate by HRH Crown Prince Alexander and the BIS Principal Ms Keserovic. Ms Keserovic closed the formal part of the evening by thanking their Royal Highnesses and the guests and by congratulating the students on their success.

On Saturday 18th May the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ organised its traditional Charity Bazaar at the BIS Primary campuses in 7a Uzicka and 3a Iliciceva in Dedinje. The theme of this year’s charity bazaar was ‘Circus’.  Like in the previous years, dozens of stalls were presented at the Bazaar. We express our most sincere thanks to all of those who made contributions to our Spring Charity Bazaar by donating food and items for raffle, running a stall or by merely attending the event.

The visitors enjoyed international cuisines from every continent, an exciting entertainment programme, souvenirs, books, fun children’s games and other curiosities. The most exciting part of the event was the raffle with numerous valuable prizes including weekends at exclusive hotels, dinners in renowned restaurants and many other surprises.

I am proud to announce that this Bazaar was probably the best one that the school has so far organised: the proceeds collected towards the NURDOR (National Association of Parents of Children with Cancer) were in the amount of 248,780 Dinars. I hope that you all enjoyed yourselves on Saturday in the nice sunny weather and pleasant atmosphere. It is also my hope that in each year to come our Charity Bazaars will be bigger and better and that, as a school, we will be able to make an even greater contribution to those in need.

With the aim to raise awareness of animal cruelty, as well as to deliver the abundant dog food donation BIS had raised, Student Council Volunteer Club organized a visit to the ‘Veterina Beograd’ Dog Shelter in Rakovica.

The students had the opportunity to see the one thousand dogs living within the shelter, as well as speak to the veterinarians, who were more than willing to answer the students eager questions.

It was an eye opening trip as it brought my attention to the devastating reality of the mistreatment of dogs. I’m glad that places like Veterina Beograd exist as they are working hard to fight these problems. – Milica Yr13

I am very proud of the students for bringing lots of dog food to support this cause. Many of us are aware of the issues regarding stray dogs but experiencing it for yourself and seeing it in person is quite impactful. It made me understand the issue in further depths. – Christian Yr13

Last month, some of the BIS Secondary students went with their teachers on a ski trip to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Kranjska Gora is an alpine resort in north western Slovenia, near the mountains and glacial lakes of Triglav National Park. The students stayed at the Ramada Hotel which was approximately 100 m from the ski slopes right in the centre of Kranjska Gora next to the main promenade.
The students got up early every day and headed to the slopes. They improved the quality of their skiing a great deal and they were very lucky to have such excellent weather for the time of year. They had great fun skiing, walking and enjoying the hotel swimming pool. The students had an amazing time and would like to recommended the February skiing trip to their friends next year.
We look forward to organising similar trips in the future.

We are delighted to announce that, due to the growth in student numbers, the BIS Junior Primary School will be moving to a spacious new building located right at the back of our Uzicka campus. The new Junior Primary School will be in Iliciceva 3a, a quiet street with a big yard and spacious, bright classrooms.
Our Uzicka 7a building will now become the BIS Infant School. This move will give our students far more space for learning, sports activities and play. The close proximity of the two campuses will allow closer ties between the key stages and avoid the need for transportation between the two schools.

This year the Secondary School Drama Club performed an amazing comedy version of ‘Clockwork’ by Philip Pullman. The story is set in Glockenheim in Germany in the old days. The play featured a clockwork Prince fighting for survival against an evil clock maker Doctor Kalmenius.

Our actors all gave superb performances overcoming their nerves and acting with expression. A surprise Christmas ending was added to the story which the audience weren’t expecting.

A highlight of the production was the song ‘Overjoyed’ which was sung a cappella by Prince Otto and Princess Mariposa.

The audience seemed very appreciative of the efforts of the students and several parents commented on the quality of the show at the end.

With scenery and props provided by our art Students and music, sound and technical support provided by music students, the show was truly a collective effort. Many thanks to our Art, Music, Drama and I.T. teachers whose help was invaluable.

After a lot of preparation and many weeks of hard work, on Thursday 6th December, the Primary students performed their annual production, ‘The Little Mermaid.’ The audience were greeted by the very creative backdrop and carefully produced props. Anticipation and excitement were high among the students. Finally the day had come and backstage the students were putting on the final touches to their make up and costumes. You could feel the excitement building up.

Finally, the time had arrived, the show started and all the hard work was worth it! This years performance was of an extremely high quality and included lovely singing, energetic dances and fantastic acting. The students and staff had all worked extremely hard to produce such a good production and it was reported as one of the best performances yet. Well done to everybody involved and thank you to the parents for their support.

This years BIS Halloween Party was a huge success. A lot of time and effort was put into creating the Haunted House and organizing the game parlor, but in the end, the event exceeded our expectations. The food and spooky drinks were provided by the Student Council and the Parent-Teacher Friends Association. At the end of the party a jury composed of the Principal and two teachers voted for the three most successful costumes.

The third place was taken by Marija whose costume was of a bloody nurse. The second place was taken by Milos who came to the party in a glamorous costume as a sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Finally, first came Val wearing an unusually imaginative costume of a spider.

Everyone had great fun, and our thanks go to all the students, teachers and parents who put a great effort into organising this successful event.
