The BIS Animation Club has existed for seven years, and every year, the culmination of the Club is the students鈥 film premiere at the prestigious .

This year鈥檚 premiere was on Sunday, June 17. The students had the opportunity to see their animated movies on the large cinema screen together with their parents and friends. This school year, twenty students, from 5 to 11 years old, worked hard and created around a hundred animated shorts films.

The students discovered film techniques such as close-up, change of plans and subjective point of view. Students also discovered how music emotionally contributes to their films and how to use the film-editing program so they can add music, sound effects and film titles to their animated films. Even the youngest were able to tell their stories through the animated film, which gave them a sense of creative power.

On June 4th, BIS students and teachers began their journey to central Serbia and the wonderful and peaceful spa town of Vrnjacka Banja. Happiness and excitement could be seen on the students鈥 faces as they eagerly boarded the coach and waved goodbye to their parents.

After a short ride, the group arrived to Svilajnac, a town in central Serbia where everyone enjoyed the guided tour of Dinosville, the permanent exhibition in the Natural History Center of Serbia. The breathtaking sight of the Jurassic scenery, the lifelike figures of dinosaurs and a gigantic replica of an erupting volcano amazed everyone and called for numerous photographs to be taken. Some of the students were able to learn about the Earth鈥檚 crust and volcanoes, while for others this created an opportunity to revise their science knowledge. After Dinosville, the students toured the Natural History Centre where they were able to see how the living things evolved since the beginning of life on Earth, the evolution of human beings and communities as well as huge dinosaur skeleton replicas and an exhibition about the original human settlements on Danube in the east of Serbia. After the tour, the student had lunch in the Dinosville restaurant, and enjoyed the dinosaur shaped desert.

After a pleasant ride on the couch the group arrived to Vrnjacka Banja and checked in at the Hotel Zepter. Everyone was extremely pleased with the accommodation and the immediate proximity of the town鈥檚 pedestrian area for which it is well known.

On the first day in Vrnjacka Banja, the students visited the Belimarkovic castle, an endowment of a nineteen century Serbian general and the second oldest building in Vrnjacka banja, where they could see the nineteen century furniture and learn about the way of life at that time.聽 After the visit, the students enjoyed some free time, the dinner which pleased everyone and a play time on a nearby playground.

The second day in Vrnjacka Banja was reserved for sightseeing, a wonderful train ride through town, shopping and swimming in the hotel鈥檚 swimming pool. The students could hear the story about the 鈥楤ridge of Love鈥 and why the tradition is to put padlocks on the bridge. Also, the group visited three thermal sources of mineral water this town is famous for and were able try some of it. Everyone seemed to enjoy the visit to the Japanese Garden in the center of Banja, a place of serenity and peace. The students loved the big wooden Japanese gazebo and the waterfall immediately next to it. In the afternoon, the students did their shopping and played with the most popular shopping item 鈥榯he squishy鈥 and had ice-cream. Soon after, everyone enjoyed a fun swim in the wonderful swimming pool at the hotel.

On the third day, the group set off to the Goc Mountain where they had an adventurous hike, a visit to Lake Goc and a traditional lunch. Later that day, the group had a sports day and a fun run as a part of the Global Running Day. The vast greenery and an abundance of fresh air as well as the beautiful sights of the Mountain cheered everyone. The story of the Goc Lake monster, and the beautiful lake captured the students鈥 attention and startled their imagination. The sightseeing was followed by a lunch in a restaurant on the Mountain. The students enjoyed a traditional Serbian lunch and desert which gave them energy for the sports day competition, the fun run at the Vrnjacka Banja stadium and a swimming session at the hotel. After this, the most popular event was held- the disco party! The students showed off some incredible dance moves and enjoyed the casual atmosphere.

On the last day in Vrnjacka Banja, the group had another shopping session and immediately after lunch everyone set off to Kragujevac, our final stop before returning home to Belgrade. In Kragujevac, a large town in Central Serbia, the group visited a Memorial Park Sumarice, where they learned about the tragic consequences of the Second World War in Serbia, and had a panoramic tour of the monuments to the victims from that time. After seeing this historical site, the students visited the aquarium at the Faculty of Science in Kragujevac where they were able to see different kinds of fishes, amphibians and reptiles. After this visit, everyone boarded the bus once again and began their trip back to Belgrade.

All the students were very happy with the trip and they provided some quality pieces of writing about the school trip the following day in the Friday鈥檚 Assembly at school.

This was a beneficial trip for the students鈥 education, social skills development and their general independence.

Last week History students went to visit the Museum of Serbia to see two exhibitions. The first one was ‘The forgotten heroes’ from the First World War. There were photos and newspapers articles about less known heroes from the First World War.

The students learnt a lot at the second exhibition. ‘Diana’s children’ was about Diana Obexer Budisavljevic who was an Austrian humanitarian in the Second World War. She rescued thousands of Serbian, Roma and Jewish children from the concentration camps in Independent State of Croatia.

This year Wednesday 6 June was 鈥淕lobal Running Day鈥 and the students at BIS joined in alongside thousands of such events taking place all worldwide.

The goal was for students, along with some parents and staff, to run 1 km!

We were grateful to, once again, be at the excellent indoor athletics stadium (Atletska dvorana Beograd) in Banjica.

With students, rotating between Primary and Secondary classes running alongside our guest runners, they all enjoyed running around the track (5 times 200 m). Each participant had their own named bib, and those who completed will receive a certificate for doing so. Tired runners at the end of their run were grateful for the drink and banana they all received.

In addition to the event, we used it as a charity to benefit a bowel cancer charity, with students donating to run. In total 11.500 RSD was raised.

50 of our Primary students were away on the annual trip, this time to Vrnjacka Banja. They too took part in their own Global Running Day event on a sports ground close to their hotel.

Well done to all involved.

In May, a group of Year 9 students had the opportunity to visit ‘Boya Porcelain’ () and learn how to make a plate or bowl out of clay.

They really enjoyed learning about the history of the craft and then designing and painting their individual creations, which they were able to keep after firing in the kiln.

On Saturday, 19 May, the BIS school community held another successful charity bazaar event entitled 鈥淪eventies Disco Party鈥. Old gramophone records and disco balls greeted the visitors at the entrance to the school and in the main stage area. The event included a fashion show featuring seventies-style costumes. Although the event started with a sunny cool morning, the weather turned, when a heavy shower threatened to interrupt proceedings. This sudden weather change however didn鈥檛 stop the enjoyment as the BIS students, parents and staff all started singing and dancing to disco music on the central stage in the rain (see the BIS facebook page for videos)!

The visitors at the event enjoyed stalls selling food of international cuisines and various international souvenirs. In addition, there were numerous stalls with activities for children such as a bouncy castle, face painting, and other games.

As in every year the highlight of the bazaar was the raffle draw with many valuable prizes including weekends at exclusive hotels, dinners at fine restaurants, spa vouchers, as well as themed gift baskets prepared by each one of BIS classes.

The proceeds of this most successful BIS bazaar will be donated to the University Children鈥檚 Hospital in Tirsova (Department for Hematology and Oncology).

We look forward to seeing you all next year鈥

All our students enjoyed the event, playing online against students throughout the world in one-minute arithmetic challenges.

Year 8, working as a team, had a fantastic result coming in 5th in the world; a fantastic achievement. Several of our other classes appeared in the Top 100 for their years: Year 5 – 91st, Year 6 – 96th, Year 7 – 25th and Years 9/10 – 45th.

We look forward to the next time this event takes place.

Saturday 17 March saw the culmination of many weeks training for several of our students when they took part in the annual 鈥溾 7 km charity race.

These students were running both the aid the charity, but also as it was the 3 month target for their (DoE) Physical Recreation section at Bronze level. In addition to them, other non-DoE students, as well as some BIS parents joined 150 others in completing this annual charity run.

Along the side of the Sava river, on Ada Ciganlija, we all set off at 11:00 am along what can only be described as a very muddy path. The mud, and light rain at the start did not put anyone off, nor the fact that two runners fell as the gun went off, so started the race covered in mud.

7 km later all who took part enjoyed crossing the finish line and receiving their medals.

For those taking the DoE this was their goal, something they were not capable of doing 3 months previously, and they had a sense of pride in having achieved their goal, even if all they wanted to do was go home, rest and hope that the mud would come off their clothes and shoes.

Well done to all who took part, it was fun.

Mr Howie, Deputy Principal
