On Tuesday 13 June, 糖心原创 celebrated its 20th Anniversary and Graduation of the 20th generation of the BIS students at the City Hall of Belgrade.

HE Mr Denis Keefe, CMG, the British Ambassador to Serbia was the Guest of Honour, and we are grateful that he presented our graduates with their certificates and for his words of wisdom. The guests were numerous Ambassadors, Embassy representatives, parents and various guests who helped to make this night special as it was.

There were also speeches by former BIS students who reflected on their experiences at BIS. The programme was embellished with Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 choirs, with the Principal, Ms Keserovic leading the Key Stage 3 choir. After the programme, all the guest enjoyed the cocktail on the City Hall terrace which was followed by a dinner for the graduates and their guests at the City Hall restaurant.

We wish all the best to our 20th generation of graduates, who have been accepted by the universities in the UK, USA and Serbia.

This year all our students from Reception to Year 10 were at the new for .

We were honoured to be joined by HE Mr Denis Keefe, CMG, the British Ambassador, who not only came along, but also ran with our Year 3 class. This is his tweet of the event:
Global Running Day 2017 - hma-tweet
In addition to the Ambassador, we were also grateful to have 3 semi-professional runners, Mr Lang, Mr Avramovic and Mr Milisavljevic, who ran along with the students and offering words of encouragement.

In a randomly selected order, by our guest runners, of a Primary class then a Secondary class each group of students came to the start line, and after a countdown started their 5 laps of the lovely indoor track. In total, therefore students (and guests) ran 1 km each.

It was great to see so many of them, even the ones who were not so keen at the start, get behind the event and try their best. All the students on completing their event were given water and fruit.

In addition to this being a worldwide running event with hundreds of thousands taking part, we also had a charity element, with students (and parents) making a small donation to take part. This will go to Bowel Cancer UK, via our Deputy Principal鈥檚 fundraising page, as he is running an ultramarathon in September in support of them. In total we raised 17.600 RSD (~鈧145/拢125).

Our thanks to the staff at the indoor athletics track for their support in making this event possible at such a suitable location.

Below is the Ambassador鈥檚 Instagram page about the event, with the gallery showing our photos:

There was a buzz of excitement on the coach as we embarked upon the trip to Palic. On our first day, we arrived in Palic and settled into the Hotel President which had stunning views of Palic lake. There we enjoyed our first delicious meal, which was followed by a stream of compliments by various students. Afterwards, we went and had an informative guided tour around Subotica as well as our first ice cream. Upon returning to the hotel, the students had a fantastic time in the pool, cooling off after a hot day in the sun.

Our Second day commenced with a visit to Kelebija Stables where the students each rode their own horse and enjoyed a ride upon a horse and cart. After lunch, we visited Palic Zoo and saw a variety of animals much to the students delight. When we returned to the hotel, the students had another swim and played in the nearby park. The evening concluded with an impromptu choir in the park.

The next day included a visit to Sovin Salas where we explored the surrounding nature and had a chance to do some fishing! The students thoroughly enjoyed this and successfully caught numerous fish 鈥 before releasing them back into the water… Later we had a Sports Day, in the park beside the hotel, which was a lot of fun. The final night culminated in a fantastic disco where both the students and teachers joined in the dancing, singing and fun having an amazing time.

On the final day, before returning home, we visited the Petrovaradin fortress in Novi Sad, which offered mesmerizing views of the city. Everyone enjoyed buying souvenirs before we explored the fortress further and finally made our way back to school. The students and staff alike had an amazing time and I know everyone can鈥檛 wait until next year鈥檚 trip!

The BIS school community and friends of our school had a great time on Saturday, 20 May at our traditional spring charity event.

This year, the event was named 鈥淪pring Fantasy Festival鈥, and all the visitors had the opportunity to enjoy excellent international food, goods and children鈥檚 games. Some of the luckiest ones won valuable raffle prizes such as weekends at various prestige hotels, lovely dinners in restaurant, relaxing spa centre treatments as well as summer camps, language schools etc.

The proceeds of the event have been dedicated for purchasing beds and equipment for one of the pavilions of the Institute for Children and Youth, 鈥淪remcica鈥, which hosts 300 users.

Last November a group of BIS students spent a weekend in Povlen as expedition training for their Duke of Edunburgh’s International Award. This is what they got up to:

Day 1:

We started our expedition at 9am and it took us about 2.5 hours to get to the mountain Povlen, near the city of Valjevo. The participants were carrying all the equipment in the backpacks to the mountain lodge, around half an hour. In the hut we had warm meal, and we got a little rest. In the afternoon we practiced archery in the field. After dinner, participants learned about cartography, azimuth and compasses.

Day 2:

After breakfast, we started the long walk – around 5 hours, without heavy equipment (only water and snacks). We climbed the peaks of Mali Povlen and Srednji Povlen, took pictures from the tops and we got back to the hut, just before rain and dark. After dinner we talked about hazards in mountains and we learned what to do in different situations.

Day 3:

In the snowy morning, we headed to the top of Veliki Povlen. On the way, participants were learning how to make fire using only tinder and tree bark, and how to make shelter from natural materials. After 2-3 hours we got back to the hut, we packed our equipment, and we back down to the place where our driver already waited. We arrived at Belgrade at 4pm.

This year the Secondary Drama Club students pulled out all the stops to prove that Christmas really isn’t Christmas without a good, old-fashioned Santa. Their comic production ‘Catch me if you Can’ featured Fax Modem and his team of inept international agents plotting to eliminate Santa and replace him with a more high-tech version – a plan eventually foiled by his loyal elves, who killed them all off. With appearances from Superman, Red Riding Hood, her grandmother, the wolf, rap dancers, talking trees and a very scary narrator, this ‘off-piste’ seasonal offering showcased a variety of student talent in acting, singing, dancing and the odd karate chop! Our performers really gave it their all and were well rewarded by the enthusiastic response of the audience.

With Scenery, props, costumes, programmes and posters provided by supporting Art students and the music, sound and technical support provided by Music students, the show was a truly collaborative effort and thanks, of course, are due to the Art, Music and I.T. teachers whose fantastic mentoring and personal help brought this all to fruition.

Now that the holiday season is behind us it is the perfect time to remember how much fun we had during December at BIS. Every year the primary students put on a spectacular show and this year was no exception. The students practiced extremely hard, doing everything from dancing and singing to acting and playing musical instruments.

Every week we seemed a little closer to the wonderful Land of Oz. The children were starting to get more into their characters, the singing was getting better, beautiful costumes were created and the set design was taking shape. It all came together on December 7, the night of the play. All those weeks of practice and hard work paid off, the students sang beautifully and performed like professional actors, giving their all on stage. The parents had lots of fun in Oz that night and were so impressed that they said it was one of the best BIS productions they have seen. Everyone was extremely proud of the students 鈥 we would like to once again thank them for their maturity, dedication and hard work!

Another amazing school trip is over. We returned from Scandinavia tired, but with a feeling that it was truly a trip of a lifetime and one we will never forget.

We landed in Stockholm, the Swedish capital, which spreads on 14 islands connected with more than 50 bridges; the place where the large lake Malaren meets the Baltic Sea. We visited: the City Hall, the artistic quarter, Nobel鈥檚 house, a modern part of the city called Norrmalm, and Djurg氓rden island. We also visited the Vasa Museum, where we admired a royal warship that had sunk in the 17th century. The boat is fantastically preserved, with more than 98% of the original structure and is a cultural and artistic treasure of Sweden. In the afternoon we strolled through Gamla Stan – the oldest part of Stockholm, and admired the magnificent building of the Royal Palace. We also climbed the 130 metre high lookout Globen Sky view.

The next day we went by bus to Oslo, through amazing landscapes of Sweden and Norway, the region of lakes and coniferous forests, in addition to the small Nordic villages, mostly made of wood. On our way to Oslo, we stopped at Karlstadt, a picturesque town nestled in one of Sweden’s largest lake, Vanern. 听Upon our arrival, we had a memorable evening and dinner at Hard Rock Caf茅 in Oslo.

Oslo is situated at the end of more than 100 kilometres long fjord. We visited the main business and shopping street of the city “Karl Johan gate”, Akershus fortress, the Royal Palace and the University. Then we went to Viking Ship Museum and Fram Museum – where we explored the largest wooden ship ever built, and found out how the crew managed to survive in the coldest and most dangerous places on Earth – the Arctic and Antarctic. We also visited Vigeland Park, where more than two hundred Gustav Vigeland鈥檚 sculptures are displayed as his donation to Oslo.

The next night was the most exciting for all of us 鈥 the night on a ferry, a big cruising ship with 9 platforms, swimming pools and Jacuzzis, restaurants and shops.

Next morning we woke up in Copenhagen – “Port of Retailers”, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. We visited Christiansburg Palace which now houses the Danish Parliament, the City Hall (K酶benhavns R氓dhus), the National Museum, the Danish Royal theatre, beautiful Amelienborg Palace (winter residence of the Danish Royal family), the famous sculpture “the Little Mermaid”, the port district Nuhavn with old colourful buildings and sailing ships. In addition, we enjoyed a one-hour boat tour around canals of Copenhagen. On the last day we went to Malm枚 across the famous 脴resund Bridge.

So many new places, so many memories, and new friendships made. We enjoyed every minute of this fabulous trip.

Here are the impressions of our students:

Our school trip to Scandinavia was so much fun in many different ways this year. We went to Sweden, Norway and Denmark and visited their capitals: Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen. I really enjoyed Sweden and Denmark.

We were very lucky with getting just a little bit of rain in the middle of the trip. This was my first trip with the school and it was extraordinary. We looked at many monumental places, learned about their history and got to have a lot of fun. The trip got some students to meet and know each other, which is great if you are new.

The best part of the trip was when Matilde, Annabella and I went to a shop full of onesies. We got to try them out and wear them around the store.

Overall, I think that it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it for other students.

Erika, Y9

This year鈥檚 school trip was to the Scandinavia countries.

In Stockholm we visited the Vasa museum 鈥 with a 98% original 17th century warship 鈥 and roamed the streets of Gamla Stan.

In Oslo we experienced a breath-taking panoramic view of the city, as well as visiting Vigeland Park, which was overflow with sculptures.

Finally, in Copenhagen, we took a boating tour through the beautiful city, passing next to the 鈥楲ittle Mermaid鈥.

It was a wonderful trip, where many memories were made and lots of hot dogs were eaten.

Milica Y11

I really loved that we could go to three different places in 5 days.

The Vasa Museum in Scandinavia was also very interesting because we could see a ship which has been underwater for 400 years.

The cruise ship was also a highlight of the trip because personally I never went on a cruise听before so I was so excited to go.

Every day, we got time to go to shop and buy stuff that we wanted to bring back home.

The food and the hotels were indescribable! The beds were comfortable and best of all; I was with my friends the whole way through.

Nikola Y8

The trip was incredible! I absolutely loved the Vasa museum鈥 So much detail and the giant ship was even more amazing!

Going to Hard Rock Caf茅 in Oslo for dinner was also quite cool. Seeing all the guitars, buying in the shop opened just for us. It was incredible.

The ferry boat was also a wondrous experience.听 Also, Mrs Nada always picks the best hotels 听J.

The only unfortunate thing for me was the duration of the trip. I think a week would鈥檝e been perfect.

Luka Y8

It was one of the best trips that I have ever been to. My favourite day was the first one, because it was the longest one, and we went to the best museum ever: the Vasa Museum. But the third day was just as good because we went to the ferry boat from Oslo to Copenhagen and we were all sleeping on bunk beds and spent time together.

The shopping was very cool and fun; Copenhagen was full of shops and malls. I bought a lot of stuff for my little sister and new basketball shoes for me: KD9鈥檚. The only thing that I disliked was the number of days, we were there for only 5 days, but doesn鈥檛 matter, I loved it anyways.

Filip, Y8

The trip was fascinating. We had a lot of fun. The food there was amazing, especially the hot dogs. We got to see a lot of sights and visited many beautiful historical places.

Darina Y11

The trip was incredibly interesting. We got an amazing opportunity to visit many beautiful places. The food there was amazing. I especially liked the hot dogs. The teachers were very understanding and helpful. I really liked the trip

Anastasia Y11

The trip was sooo nice. I liked sleeping on the ferry; I loved visiting Stockholm by boat. The tour with the bus was a very good idea; all the places we visited were very interesting. I loved wandering with my friends in the pedestrian zone, shopping things. The food that we ate was very good. There was just one thing that sadly was closed, the Tivoli Park.

Matilde, Y9

On the school trip we saw lots of different monuments. We were always moving, which was pretty exhausting, but that made it much more enjoyable to rest on the bus. I liked how we got out and moved around but I felt some of us spent too much on shopping. Overall, the trip was enjoyable and I will most likely go on the school trip next year.

Eva Y9

This year we went to Scandinavia with school. We had a great time and saw a lot of new places. We visited Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen and we all really liked those cities. We will never forget this school trip.

Ana Y11

This year鈥檚 study tour to Scandinavia was amazing. We visited lots of historical sites and made lots of new friends. I cannot wait for the next year鈥檚 trip.

Recently Year 9 students took part in the Art & Craft workshop held by 鈥淩e: Crafts鈥 workshop.

The 鈥淩e: Crafts鈥 workshop was created for students to gain practical knowledge about materials, techniques and methods, using woollen felt to make figures.听 In addition, they were introduced to some techniques of placing products on the market, developing communication skills and knowledge of project management.

The idea is for our students to make souvenirs, jewellery, bookmarks and gifts for Easter and Christmas, as well as sell their products at the BIS Spring Charity Bazaar, thus learning the importance of social responsibility.
