Animated films Club exists for already five years at the 糖心原创 – Belgrade. Every year, the culmination of Club鈥檚 work is the students鈥 film premiere at the venerable institution – The Museum of the Yugoslav Cinematheque with whom the school successfully cooperates for years now. 听This year鈥檚 premiere was held on June 12th 2016. The students have the opportunity to see their animated movies on the real, large movie screen together with their parents and friends. This school year, 2015/16, twenty-four children, ages 6-11, learned how to make animated films within Animation Club. They worked hard and created around a hundred animated shorts films. For some of the students this was the fifth straight year to create the animated films within the club, and it showed as their films become more complex in their stories and the precision of their techniques dramatically improved. Some of them worked on a one film for entire two semesters and created impressive animated films that used the sophisticated cinematic language and told longer stories.

The technique the students used is stop – motion animation that requires a lot of discipline and patience. Every movement in the film requires that the figure should be filmed, then slightly moved and then filmed again. It鈥檚 a meticulous process. The children work in pairs or groups of three, which helps them, to learn how to work together creatively. During the process, they learn how media is created, so this is also a media literacy class in a way. A hands – on participation in the process empowers them to be better understood the media and their effect.

The students were discovering film techniques such as close-up, change of plans and subjective point of view. These are film language elements that are not familiar even to many adults. Children also discovered how music emotionally contributes to their films and how to use the film-editing program so they can add music, sound effects and film titles to their animated films. Even the youngest children were able to tell their stories through the animated film, which gave them a sense of creative power.

When children experience the possibility of expressing through such a sophisticated media such as animated film 鈥 that gives them the confidence and mentally enables them to do everything else they imagine.

On the last day of May the annual 糖心原创 trip began. This year the location of the visit was Ivanjica, a scenic town and the antithesis of bustling city life in Belgrade.

When the bus left the school gates a shout of excitement was heard and a few tears were shed from our students who were leaving their parents for the first time. Ten minutes later all the adults were forgotten about as the first of many songs on the journey began.

The group arrived to find spacious rooms with a view of a waterfall and mountains from their bedroom windows. As soon as the luggage was unpacked we ate a hearty meal and then rushed out to the playground.

At the rear end of the hotel a life size replica of a sailing ship dominated the horizon and most of our students set sail on imaginary voyages of discovery. The students seemed delighted at the quality of the facilities especially as they were so close to the hotel.

A couple of hours later our tour of the local town started and we managed to take in sights like the Partizan Square, the Waterfall, and the Javor Football ground. We were educated about the history of the town by our guide but some of the groups were slightly distracted by the Ice Cream shop.

Early the next day, we set off on a boat journey around the meandering turns of the Uvac river. The views were spectacular and it must be one of the most beautiful parts of Serbia.听 The boat eventually arrived at the ice cave and we went inside this freezing cavern. The single file path was difficult to negotiate especially as we were only able to use torch light. At the end of the first section the students were asked to switch off their lights and pitch darkness ensued. The students seemed to love the tranquil nature of the cave but did find the minute of silence a challenge.

Immediately after the cave visit we got changed and rushed down to the Spa Centre swimming pool. Luckily there were only two other guests at the pool so we had the whole facility to ourselves.

On the third day the students set off on a mountain waterfall adventure. The heavy rain the night before made the path slightly muddier than normal but that didn鈥檛 dampen the spirits of the adventurers. The students were surprised when we had to walk across a couple small streams on our way to the peak. A few of our school mates appeared to be more used to shopping centres than mountains and were initially hesitant to place their feet down in anything resembling mud. However, by the time we made our way back to the bus even the most hesitant of our party became veteran hill walkers.

On the last night the traditional disco took place with most students wearing their best outfits. The disco took place in the best night club in Ivanjica and the DJ played songs all night that the students loved but the teachers struggled to name.

At 9 pm some of the younger students were escorted back to the hotel. The older students spent an extra hour dancing to the latest sounds. After the final song was played a round of applause was given to the DJ and the slow walk back to the hotel began. Most students had already given every ounce of strength that they had left to perform gravity defying moves on the dance floor. The talk of late night parties soon vanished as the students appeared soundly asleep by 10.30 pm when the last lights went out and the second and third floors of the hotel were silent for the rest of the night.

The bus left Friday morning with comments from the hotel staff such as 鈥渢his was the best set of guests we have ever had from a school鈥 glowing in our ears.

On the way back to Belgrade we stopped at a Serbian monastery in the Javor area and a lengthy speech by the head monk informed us about all the historical details of the area. The visit to the monastery shop proved more popular than expected with most students being determined to spend their money before they got home. The students bought souvenirs from the Monastery such as pencils, pens and rubbers for school or gifts for their parents.

Finally, the bus arrived back at school. Some of the educational tour attendees described the visit as the 鈥榖est school trip ever鈥 and one teaching assistant mentioned the excursions each day were the most memorable of any trip she has attended.

The students and staff alike had a trip they will never forget and I know everyone can鈥檛 wait until next year鈥檚 trip!

The BIS school community and friends of our school had a great time on Saturday, 21 May at our traditional spring charity event. This year, the event was named 鈥淢edieval Fantasy Faire鈥. All the visitors had the opportunity to enjoy excellent international food, goods and children鈥檚 games. Some of the luckiest ones were drawn out for valuable raffle prizes. The whole atmosphere of the event was in the spirit of the Middle Ages. The proceeds of the event have been dedicated to support 鈥淪ummer Camp 2016鈥, under the project 鈥淟ife Values鈥, for 20 children from various orphanages.

On 16th December, secondary students and their parents were treated to the BIS KS3 Drama Clubs performance entitled 鈥楲essons from the Past鈥. 16 talented students from Years 7, 8 and 9 performed a series of scenes from different historical eras, linked by the theme of studying the areas in history.

The play opened with students rushing to school to watch a presentation of the Titanic disaster – a series of mimed pictures outlining the events to a moving rendition of 鈥楾he heart will go on鈥 by one of the Y7 students.听 This was visually supported by a video of a Y12 student playing the song on the piano. Next were a comic Greek Gods Got Talent scene (where Greek Gods displayed their mythical 鈥榯alents鈥), a haunting portrayal of the 17th Century Salem Witch trials, an irreverent look at Roman warfare and a student directed scene called 鈥極liver Twist and the Pickpockets鈥. In between, a confused old man randomly appeared on stage looking for his shopping list 鈥 excellently characterized by a young Y7 student.

Throughout, students demonstrated their abilities in singing, dancing, mime, comedy, expressive dialogue and effective characterization. After weeks of hard work, excellent team work and collaborative devising of the scenes, the Drama Club members gave an impressive taste of their many talents. Behind the scenes, all the props were ingeniously made (mainly from cardboard and scraps of material) by 3 Year 7 students.

As Oliver Twist said, 鈥楶lease Sir 鈥 we want some more!鈥

On December 9th听2015 the British Primary School held their annual Christmas production. This year鈥檚 performance was an adaptation of 鈥楾he Lion King鈥, the Broadway musical. It is Broadway’s听听in history and the highest grossing Broadway production of all time.听However, the B.I.S Primary School version was showing for one night only.

The Lion King听is a听听based on the 1994听听听with music by听听and lyrics by听. The BIS version featured songs by Jazmine Sullivan, Charlie Smalls, Katy Perry and Pharell Williams.

The production took place in Theatre 78. The 380 seat venue was completely filled to capacity with parents who eagerly awaited the lifting of the opening curtain.听 A table of international food was enjoyed by all our guests while waiting for the show to start.

The students backstage were very nervous in the moments leading up to the start of the show.听 Ingrid Pantelic (Year 6) almost fainted with excitement just seconds before the production was due to start and had to be revived by Miss Maric.

The Year 6 dance got the show off to a spectacular start and the rendition of the 鈥楥ircle of Life鈥 theme featured in the programme reminded the audience of an authentic South African choir.

All of the children in the Primary School appeared on stage at least twice wearing superbly designed costumes, many of which were created by Mrs Lungalov. Their roles required them to act, sing or dance in front of the amazing 35m虏 backdrop which featured a giant elephant and life size giraffe.

Our students worked very hard over a six weeks period of rehearsals to memorize a 36 page script which included 10 songs and 6 dances.

On the night of the show all the hours of time spent remembering our lines were worthwhile because the BIS Primary School children put on an exceptional performance.

Some students in Year 6 mentioned it was an amazing feeling to be on stage and one that they would never forget.

At the end of the show all the children in the Primary School and the teachers entered the stage to dance to the song 鈥業n the Jungle鈥. When the song had finished, the cast and all the teachers were given a standing ovation, especially our youngest students who were dressed up as zebras, parrots and monkeys.

Many thanks to all the teachers, parents and pupils who dedicated their time to help make 听this year鈥檚 show a phenomenal success.

What will be the theme of the production next year? You will have to wait and see if we can equal the quality of this amazing 2015 production.

BIS students have returned from another amazing annual study tour. This year the destination was The Netherlands, or 鈥楾he Land of Tulips鈥 where culture, cuisine, art, sport and fun are inextricably linked. Our first stop was in Amsterdam, one of the most visited cities in Europe, and there is no shortage of reasons why. We also visited Hague, Scheveningen, Madurodam, Rotterdam, Delft, Marken, Zandvoort and Folendam.
Our students had the opportunity to experience another language and culture, gain a deeper 听听听understanding of modern European history, World War II and the Holocaust at Anne Frank鈥檚 House, examine the geography of the region and the constant battle to keep out the North Sea, understand personal organisation, co-operating and working with others in a variety of environments, gain independence and self-confidence, strengthen exciting friendships and make new friends.

Here are their impressions:

鈥楾he trip was great. If you are new to BIS this was a great opportunity to meet new friends and to bond with other students. I really liked the last day because we went shopping. In the evening we would have fun in our rooms and the last day, Tara, Kari, Stavros and I were painting each others hair and we played a game called Bean Boozled. Each day we would travel a lot and have a lot of fun.鈥 Peter, Year 7

鈥極ur trip to Holland was one of the best trips so far. We visited Amsterdam, Delft, Hague, Folendam and Rotterdam. In Amsterdam we experienced the city鈥檚 free spirit; in Hague and Rotterdam we learned about history and in Delft and Folendam we saw the beauty of Holland鈥檚 nature.听The Madurodam museum gave us the opportunity to see the most important and most interesting sights in Holland.听The Diamond factory, the cheese and clogs farm and the night we spent at the beach, contributed to the best memories.听Still, the most memorable moment was the channel ride in Amsterdam.鈥 Milica, Year 11

鈥楾his year鈥檚 study tour was to the Netherlands/Holland. We visited beautiful cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Delft, as well as the vast range of attractions spread around the country (a few include Anne Frank鈥檚 House, the house where Jewish diarist Anne Frank hid during WWII, Madurodam and the Cheese Farm). We also got to experience the country and different culture. My favourite part was definitely the relaxing boat ride through many channels in Amsterdam, the train rides from Amsterdam to Zandvoort and back. Overall, it was an amazing trip and I wouldn鈥檛 mind going back.鈥 Milica, Year 10

鈥楾his year, our trip to Amsterdam was one of the best so far. We had only 5 days, but enough time to explore the beauty of the Netherlands鈥 main cities.听My favourite place was Madurodam in Hague. I also enjoyed walks on Amsterdam busy streets. I hope to go back there, some day鈥︹ Olga, Year 12

鈥業t was a brilliant experience that I am so happy to have taken part in. I advise all students that have not had a chance to contribute in the trip to do so next year.听There were so many breathtaking views and foods that I鈥檓 glad I tried. Needless to say that six bags of 鈥楧oritos鈥, friend and I devoured, were simply mesmerizing.鈥 Ivan, Year 9

鈥楾he sights we visited were breathtaking and unforgettable. The trip brought us all together while we were exploring new places. This was one of the most beautiful and eventful trips so far.鈥 Tara V, Year 9

鈥楾he trip was fun and I can鈥檛 say I was ever bored. We always had what to do and to visit new destinations. It was very interesting.鈥 Ana V, Year 9

鈥楾he trip to the Netherlands was simply amazing despite the fact that few students misplaced their passports and boarding cards, causing the turmoil, but luckily found them quickly. Nothing could change the fact that we had so much fun. The long walks through Amsterdam, the smallest city Madurodam, beautiful restaurants in Rotterdam, sleepovers in the hotel in Zandvoort, the movies we watched, the walks on a beach, everything was simply amazing. There are no words that can describe how much fun I had. I would love to visit this country again.鈥 Petar, Year 9

鈥業 really enjoyed our trip to Amsterdam. We visited a lot of places and we had so much fun. I was blown away by Amsterdam鈥檚 nature. Another thing I enjoyed were evenings at the hotel and our walk on the beach in Zandvoort.鈥櫶 Jelena, Year 8

鈥楾his year we went to Amsterdam and it was awesome. We also visited Madurodam Rotterdam, Delft, the Diamond Museum. My favourite place was 鈥楽tarbucks鈥 and the funniest thing we did was when my friend and roommate Kari died Peter鈥檚 and Stavros鈥 hair in blue and green. I also liked very much the huge food centre in Rotterdam. The only thing I didn鈥檛 like was the hotel鈥檚 food (dinner). The school trip was really fun and I would go again.鈥 Tara, Year 8

鈥楾he trip was very well organised and fun. My favourite part were the visits to the miniature museum and Anne Frank鈥檚 House. Being in the hotel and going to the beach in the evening was really fun too. I had a great time and I got to know people from other year groups.鈥 Sarah, Year 10

鈥業 really enjoyed going to Amsterdam, it is a very beautiful and happy place. I loved the small, unique houses with flowers and plants all around them. It was also very clean and there were lots and lots of bikes. I also got to know some new people from the school.听The thing I was the most excited for was the visit to Anne Frank house, since I had already read the book and wanted to see the actual setting of the diary. Even though we had to wait for over one hour, it was worth it.听I think that we should have been allowed to go to each others rooms in the hotel, if we were quiet, of course. I also think that when we had free time, either the whole group can walk alone, or no one can.鈥 Lucia, Year 8

鈥楳y overall impression of the trip to Amsterdam is that it was simply perfect. The only thing that could be improved is that it was longer.听My favourite part was the eye opening visit to Anne Frank鈥檚 house.听I recommend that everyone who hasn鈥檛 been able to come with us this time, come next year. We visited some truly memorable places and returned full of unforgettable experiences.鈥 Ana, Year 9

‘My favourite day was the very first one, because it was the longest day of my life. I woke up at 4:00 AM and went to the airport. It took us few hours to get to the amazing, huge airport at Amsterdam. We walked through the town sightseeing, visited few shops, had an amazing boat ride and saw the ‘I AMsterdam’ huge sign. On a third day we went to my favourite place of all, Anne Frank’s House. We waited few hours but it wa absolutely worth it. Once inside, we saw her diary, secret annex, pictures, all the rooms. The last day was also very nice. We woke up in the morning and right after breakfast went onto the train to Amsterdam. I bought a beautiful pair of Adidas shoes for my brother and a few toys for my little sister. The last evenng was fun since some people dyed their hair in blue and green. I played Bean Boozled with Nikola and Luka. I was not lucky at all. I got the very worst Beans like: Boogers, Vomit and Dog Food.’听 Filip, Year 7
