There’s no greater recognition of a graduate’s achievements than a high school graduation ceremony. 糖心原创 (BIS) held its Prize giving and Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, June 13, at 鈥淰ila Jelena鈥.

On that occasion, our primary and secondary students were awarded for their outstanding academic achievements. Aleksandar (Year 6) received the Council of 糖心原创s (COBIS) Award, Luka (Year 6) and Milica (Year 9) received the 鈥淛onathan Rider鈥 Academic Achievement Award. Our graduates, Predrag, received the Council of 糖心原创s (COBIS) Award, and Jan, received the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) Award, and all graduates received their diplomas. The diplomas and awards were presented by the Guest of Honour, H.E. Mrs Narinder Chauhan, Ambassador of the Republic of India in Serbia.

The Principal, Ms Aleksandra Keserovic, the Guest of Honour and the Deputy Principal, gave speeches, in which they congratulated our graduates for their achievements and reflected on what had been a remarkable day for the students of BIS. Jan, the president of the Student Council also made a speech.

Then when everyone had their diplomas, they officially moved the tassels to the other side and tossed their mortar boards into the air. Balloons were everywhere, there were rounds of loud applause and the standing ovation and the young people were officially graduates. Then it was time for hugs, for meeting parents and for celebrating. They were treated to an evening of excellent food and fine wine, accompanied by the music of 鈥淪kale鈥.

Congratulations, Class of 2015!

On Saturday, May 16th, the BIS community and many guests gathered at our Primary School premises to partake in our annual International Charity Festival. In spite of pessimistic weather forecasts, the day (and the weather, eventually) turned out to be a success.

With dozens of stalls present, featuring everything from home-made jewellery to exotic foods, guests were immediately upon arrival ensured that they would not find their options to enjoy themselves being limited. A large fashion show created by BIS students who wore costumes from Serbia, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, China, Japan, Nigeria, Norway amongst others was held, and while several students sang in choirs and independently, a local martial arts group only added to the variety that was displayed on stage.

Our youngest guests also seemed to enjoy themselves, as both a bouncy castle, magicians and face painters were present, and many games stalls, organised by the Primary teachers. Unfortunately, however, some Year 13 students were very saddened by hearing that they were simply too “big” to use the bouncy castle! With temperatures running high, the ice cream stall-to the great joy of our Student Council-once again turned out to be one of the most visited ones.

The proceeds of this year’s Bazaar went to the Red Cross in Kragujevac. A large proportion of the money we collected was collected through our much-loved raffle draw, which got teachers, students, parents and other guests alike anxiously holding on to their tickets to see whether they had won something. Prizes included holidays, many vouchers from companies, and baskets full of items from each created by each of the BIS classes.

The vast majority of BIS students attended the event, and many of them volunteered to ensure that the event ran smoothly. Indeed, many Year 11 to 13 students saw volunteering at the Bazaar as an excellent opportunity to both take a break from studying for their exams, but also to catch up with friends in a great atmosphere.

Attached are a host of photos from the International Charity Festival, which hopefully will give you at least a glimpse of the event.

Students were recently presented with their certificates at a prize giving ceremony hosted by HRH Crown Prince Alexander and HRH Crown Princess Katherine at the Royal Palace.

Once again a number of students from the 糖心原创 (BIS) had successfully completed the three levels of the International Award for Young People (commonly known as the Duke of Edinburgh Award).

Having spent weekends camping, and completed many theory and practical tests, all the students (and their representatives) were thrilled to have their achievements recognised by their Royal Highnesses at a formal ceremony.

HRH Crown Prince Alexander gave a speech at the ceremony to them, expounding upon the theme of the value of such awards, and he mentioned completing this when he was a student at Gordonstoun School. The BIS Principal, Ms Aleksandra Keserovic gave a speech extolling the virtues and importance of the education they have received, and the challenges they faced in fitting in the demands of this activity with their ongoing academic progress.

In total HRH Crown Prince Alexander handed out 14 awards; 1 Gold, 4 Silver and 9 at Bronze Level.

Following the official ceremony, the students and their guests, along with members of the corps diplomatique and other invited guests enjoyed a cocktail event. During this time students were able to discuss with the local TV and other media representatives exactly what they had been doing and they had enjoyed the experiences.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is offered to students above fourteen years of age as one of the extra-curricular activities at BIS. Students had to learn both practical skills in these weekly meetings as well as undertake expeditions. During this meetings students learn about first aid, danger in the mountains, camping, orienteering, outdoor sports, and necessary equipment amongst other topics. They will then undertake two expeditions, per Award level, to demonstrate what they have learned; the first expedition being a training run, and the second used towards their Award level. In addition students must spend a certain number of months completing a form of volunteer work.

At the Bronze Award level students will complete an expedition over two days with one night away, and by the Gold Level this rises to one qualifying expedition of four days and three nights (which must be in 鈥渨ild country鈥 and also a separate residential of five days and four nights.

With their additional examination work, fitting in such a demanding series of activities can be stressful. In completing this students build their level of independence and a real belief in themselves, outside of their academic work. They feel that they have really achieved something when they pass each level.

BIS is grateful that to have this shared belief with their Royal Highnesses, who agreed, once again, to hold the Award Ceremony at the Royal Palace. In doing so it clearly demonstrates to the students the value that the Principal, Ms Keserovic, has for not only achieving excellent examination grades, but also overall development of students.

We are sure that many more students will complete this highly valued award in the coming years.

This year鈥檚 Secondary Christmas Show took place at Pan Theatre, and brought a combination of drama and music performance.

The Drama Club students prepared a shortened and adjusted version of a popular comedy by Michael Fryne “Noises off”. The content of the comedy is focuses around what happens behind the curtains, as well as during rehearsals and what actors are presumably like. Speaking about her Drama Club students (Jelena, Milica, Sophia, Lucia, Alisa, Mahsheed and Darina), their teacher, Masha Dakic said that in preparation for the play they had all shown great enthusiasm and willingness w to try out different strategies that would improve their acting skills.

Learning Drama is also a valuable tool for building good interpersonal relationships, communication skills, trust, self-confidence and self-awareness.

Through various assignments, scenes or situa颅tions the students found themselves in a team work situation, and were able to explore how they present themselves, and how they position themselves amongst others. The final version of the 鈥淣oises off鈥 Secondary School play was a brave step into the public.

In addition to the play, There were pop songs given by Fiona, Maggie, Katarina, Natasha, Ana, Una, Sven, Marija and Uros.

Students of Serbian Studies recited aphorisms by Dusko Radovic.

At the end of the show, students sang Christmas Carols in English, Spanish, French and German, all wearing Father Christmas hats which they threw into the audience.

Well done!

On December 10th 2014 the British Primary School held their annual Christmas production. This year鈥檚 performance was an adaptation of 鈥楥harlie and the Chocolate Factory鈥 the West End musical.

The story of 鈥楥harlie and the Chocolate Factory鈥 was originally written by Roald Dahl in 1964. The story featured the adventures of young Charlie Bucket(Filip) inside the Chocolate Factory聽 of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka (Erol).

The production took place in Rakavica Cultural Centre. The 300 seat venue was filled to capacity with parents who eagerly awaited the lifting of the opening curtain.

All of the children in the Primary School appeared on stage twice wearing elaborately designed costumes. Their roles required them to act sing or dance on the brightly lit stage.

Our students worked very hard over a six weeks period of rehearsals to memorize a 34 page script which included 20 songs and 12 dances.

On the night of the show all the practise was worthwhile because 聽the BIS Primary School children put on a faultless performance.

At the end of the show all the children in the Primary School and the teachers entered the stage to the sing the song 鈥楶ure Imagnation鈥. When the song had finished, the cast and all the teachers were given a standing ovation especially our reception who were dressed up as Oompa Loompas.

Many thanks to all the teachers, parents and pupils who dedicated their time to ensuring that this year show was an outstanding success.

BIS secondary students have just returned from their annual study tour, this year to Tuscany, Italy. There were 52 students accompanied by 4 teachers and 2 guides. While driving through the Tuscan land, vast fields dotted with vineyards and typical Tuscan-style houses caught our eyes and made us immediately fall in love with this part of Italy. Plains alternate with hills and mountains. Not a single inch of land stands bare and unused. This is an area of gorgeous landscapes, rich artistic legacy, cities which stand witness to masterpieces of human mind and hand.聽 In eight days they visited eight medieval towns.

In Siena we walked around the Piazza del Campo and learned about the famous Palio horse race. We had some free time to explore on our own, so we got some gelato (of course) and walked around the Piazza.

In the village of San Gimignano; known for its many towers, we enjoyed wonderful views of the countryside. We had the award winning gelato (the best in the world) from Gelateria Dondoli near the main square. The mango gelato was one of the best things I have ever tasted in my life 鈥 cold, creamy, completely mango-infused deliciousness. Yum.

We also visited Verona. Shakespeare placed star-crossed lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet in聽Verona聽for good reason: romance, drama and fatal family feuding have been the city’s hallmark for centuries. Never mind that Romeo and Juliet were completely fictional characters, and that there’s hardly room for two on the narrow stone balcony: we flocked to this 14th-century house to see the tiny balcony and add our names to the graffiti on the courtyard causeway.

Certainly one of the highlights of our trip was a whole day visit to Gardaland. Wow. Many students had an adrenaline ride on every rollercoaster, fantasy rides and water-rides. There is a great fast food restaurant and smaller ones all over the park.

The day ended with the medieval dinner at Movieland. We went inside a mediaeval castle, where an exciting jousting tournament awaited us in the company of King Astolfo and his knights, followed by a banquet. 聽All of us got crowns at the entrance and found our seats in the arena shaped restaurant.聽 There was a show going on during dinner and we actively participated in it.聽 Four Knights, and Esquires, with the help of standard bearers competed in games of horseback skills, and fight in an attempt to win the hand of the princess. The strength of cheering for our Knight, certainly affected the outcome of the tournament. Ana even got a rose from one of the knights. The King himself invited us to take a seat at the luscious banquet cooked all for us, guests of the Kingdom. The big surprise was that we had to eat with our fingers and the food was delicious.

The trip to Cinque Terre, or 鈥渢he five lands鈥 that comprises five villages, was the one our students liked the most. Not even bad weather we had on that day could ruin their glory. We took the boat to get there and returned by train.

The Rotonda di San Lorenzo, the thousand year old church and聽 Basilica di Sant Andrea聽Impressive and stylish: designed by Alberti were the places we visited in Mantoua.

Bologna was another delightful city we visited on our tour. It was the liveliest given the fact that the oldest university in Europe was located right in the heart of the city. Our students were impressed by the fact that famous people like Dante Allighieri (14th century), Nicolaus Copernicus (15th century) and Umberto Eco (20th century) studies at the University of Bologna which was ranked inside the top 200 in the world.

In Florence we saw the Doors of Paradise, the Duomo, and Michelangelo鈥檚 David, Ponte Vecchio, one of the icons of Florence and paid a visit to the Uffizi Gallery full of iconic paintings and sculptures by Giotto, da Vinci, Raphael, Caravaggio, Titian, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Rembrandt, and Rubens. Including the Birth of Venus and much more! We enjoyed the ornately decorated ceilings and sculptures lining the corridor as well. Incredible experience indeed.

On the last day we visited fabulous Venice.

This was the official report on our amazing trip.

At nights, after dinner, our students organised parties and had great time. It was a fantastic experience to all of them especially those who visited Italy for the first time.
