Our Extra-curricular basketball club recently took part in the BC “Postar” Basketball tournament held at the club’s courts, as the part of the “Let’s keep the children safe” Project.

BIS entered two teams in the tournament in the Year 4/5 and Year 6 categories. Both teams lost their first game but then after a little last minute coaching began an amazing unbeaten run.聽 Neither team lost another game for the rest of the tournament. The furious man to man defence that both teams implemented produced exceptional results. Our opponents found it almost impossible to score and even found it difficult to pass the ball out from underneath their own basket.

In the final match of the Year 6 category, the scores were level after an amazing backboard shot by Tara V. With five seconds left on the clock Thomas S took a final shot that would eventually decide the destiny of the silverware. As the ball floated in the air towards the basket the eyes of everyone in the crowd followed its trajectory towards the rim. A few seconds later an eruption of elation followed as the BIS team realized that they had won the ‘International School’ category of the tournament in both the Year 4/5 and Year 6 age groups.

Mr Davies was very happy to collect the trophies on behalf of his teams and made a small speech thanking the organizers of the competition.

We are pleased that 糖心原创`s Traditional Spring Charity Bazaar on Saturday 18th May was yet again a tremendous success.

The day of fun had many shopping stalls, stalls of international cuisines, interesting crafts and games workshops such as pottery, origami, mancala, and many more. Children enjoyed playing in a bouncy castle and having their faces painted. The programme also included, BIS school choirs, a capoeira demonstration, a fashion show, salsa dance and a magician!

There was also a raffle with many valuable prices including a 10 day holiday in Greece, a weekend in Kopaonik, two days at Vrdnik, brunch/dinners in many exclusive Belgrade restaurants, and many other surprises for our visitors.

One of our students, Cameron in Year 6, has been selected this year as a Student Ambassador for the World Education Games (WEG). He is one of only two students selected from all the participating schools in Europe (exc. UK). This is a fantastic achievement bearing in mind that last year there were just under 30,000 schools entered.

The events that make up the World Education Games () run from March 4 to 8, with the practice system already available. All BIS students will be participating in live maths, literacy and science competitions against their peers from all over the world. This is a great fun educational learning experience that we have taken part in since its inception six years ago. Last year we achieved some fantastic results (see ).

This year we will also be using the period from now until the end of the event to raise money for Unicef鈥檚 鈥淪chool-In-A-Box,鈥 which helps purchase learning kits for extremely poor schools. The Student President, Tina in Year 13, will be coordinating our fundraising activities.

We are sure that such events (both the World Education Games and our fundraising) have a positive reinforcement of the desire within all students present to do well and help others not as fortunate as themselves.

One of Cameron鈥檚 roles as a Student Ambassador for Europe (and especially within Serbia) is to promote this event and we encourage more participation and competition by both Serbian and International students. Cameron will be blogging and tweeting on the WEG website about our activities and progress and this will also be visible on the official BIS Facebook page ().

On the 14 December 2012 the British International Primary School held their annual Christmas production. This year鈥檚 performance was an adaptation of 鈥楽hrek鈥 the animated Oscar winning feature film. The character of Shrek was originally created by William Steig in 1990.

The production took place in the Rakovica Cultural Centre. This three hundred seat venue was a fitting place for the talents of the children of BIS.

The students worked very hard to memorise a very lengthy script of 37 pages and 12 songs. The words were especially difficult to perform as many of the students had to speak in a unusual accents, such as Ivan (Shrek), who became Scottish for the evening and Konstnatin (the Donkey) who was required to use an American tone to his voice.

A completely full hall of over 350 people filled the venue to capacity. All our students appeared on the stage at least twice in roles which required them to dance, sing or act. Every student had their own unique costume to wear which you can admire in the pictures.

At the climax of the show every student entered the stage to sing 鈥業鈥檓 a believer鈥. When the song had finished the cast received a huge ovation from the audience especially our Reception class and the newlyweds, Shrek and Fiona (Ana), who were at the front of the stage.

Many thanks must go to the staff who worked vigorously to ensure the show was a breathtaking spectacular event.

Immediately after the show some parents expressed these views;

I was amazed that children so young could perform at such a high level

The show was the best I had ever seen by a Primary School

It made the Broadway show look like an amateur production

Our KS4 and KS5 physics students had the opportunity to visit the interactive exhibition ‘CERN in Serbia’ that was organized by the ‘Center for the Promotion of Science’ in cooperation with the Physics Institute in Belgrade.

What does the CERN accelerator, and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) look like? What kind of experimental investigations are conducted there? What is the standard model of particle physics and the mysterious Higgs boson? Those were only some of the questions addressed at the lecture organized for our students that was followed by a supporting video presentation.

Additionally, students observed popular demonstrations of experiments from various fields of physics, such as mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism and many more.

Events like this truly encourage young people’s intellectual curiosity.

This year BIS students chose this amazing city as a destination for their annual study tour. It is said that there’s so much to see and do in London, and that it’s easy to be overwhelmed. We鈥檝e discovered it to be so very true. What a lot of history all in one place! 聽Lovely to stroll around and see all the things we鈥檝e only seen in history books. It all comes to life before our eyes.

There was something for everyone: Tower of London, Henry VIII, Ann Boleyn, Crown Jewels, what more to say?聽 Big Ben which is by far the most known symbol of London: elegant, impressive, imposing. British museum – amazing place. We saw the Mummies and the Rosetta Stone. So much to see and do in this place, loads of interesting displays of ‘borrowed’ heritage from around the world.

Westminster Abbey and the Poet鈥檚 Corner 鈥 the burial place of the nation鈥檚 greatest playwrights. We saw graves and memorials to Geoffrey Chaucer, Samuel Johnson and Charles Dickens (who was apparently buried here against his wishes 鈥 on the orders of Queen Victoria). Famous scientists like Isaac Newton, James Maxwell, Charles Darwin and Michael Faraday. There were grand tablets to commemorate Jane Austin and the Bronte Sisters, William Shakespeare and Robert Burns.

The Globe theatre was another treat situated right on the banks of the Thames, rebuilt as best they could, to give it a real feeling of “Ye Olde England”.

We visited the Tate Modern, the National Gallery and Natural History Museum and found them all fascinating.

London Dungeon was a unique experience. They frightened us, poured water at us, and we met the most sinister characters from their past, from the serial killer Jack the Ripper, the barber Sweeney Todd and the regal Bloody Mary. A lot of excitement and screaming.

Another place we enjoyed was Madam Tussauds聽 which was full of celebrity waxworks. Those were being surrounded and hung on, hugged and kissed. I do have to smile though… And when the girls spotted the figure of Justin Bieber, I thought I was going to have to revive them. Our guide Tony said “I wonder how they would act if they saw the real thing!”

One whole day was dedicated to the university city of Cambridge. It was as if we went back into the past. The beautiful Cam River and all those colleges; HRH The Prince of Wales graduated from Trinity, and we visited their library.

We also had a lot of fun shopping. Especially in the world famous department store Harrods. Its motto is simple “Omnia, omnibus, ubique” 鈥 “Everything for everyone, everywhere.” 聽The interior is worth the going alone. We spent a lot of time in the Egyptian Hall, with gold-leaf columns. There is also a famous tiled ceiling in the first-floor food hall 鈥 even the toilets are worth a visit. Seriously! 聽Harrods has very strict rules on dress, and porters 鈥 known as the 鈥楪reen Men鈥 鈥 kick out everyone inappropriately dressed. Not to mention that children under the age of 16 are not allowed unless accompanied by an adult. So I entered with the flock of six young ladies eager to explore the store. No one bought anything since everything was too expensive. Later we went to the best shopping streets and spent all our money in Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and Portobello Road.

Finally, we forgot everything we’ve heard about bland, mushy British food鈥攖he restaurants in London are fabulous.

We all had a wonderful time. The only complaint was that the trip was too short.

Our Key Stage 2 (7-11 yrs old) and Key Stage 3 (12-14 yrs old) had a great time in Kneza Mihailova and then at Kolorac today attending Belgrade’s Robotics Festival; with the highlight being watching ASIMO in action.

At the exhibition in Kneza Mihailova students got to see many different types of robots in operation, as well as making some basic one鈥檚 themselves.

The highlight was then them watching ASIMO in action at Kolarac. ASIMO walked up stairs, enacted a scene from a caf茅, kicked a ball, ran across the stage and for its finale did a couple of dances. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The subject 鈥淕eography鈥 includes a variety of topics and skills. What better way to learn and remember those skills than in the field.

The Year 10 and 11 IGCSE Geography students enjoyed a day out of the classroom in order to understand the practical skills needed for their course.

We began with an assessment of cloud cover, to be repeated during the day, to depict the changes in the weather.

The next skill was counting traffic for flow diagrams, and types of vehicle for a divided bar graph. Venue 鈥 the entrance to Kalemegdan on Pariska Tadeusha.

Then we walked to the viewpoint of the Danube/Sava Rivers to learn to do sketches and assess riparian land use. The students used homemade clinometers to measure the gradient of the slope down to the water鈥檚 edge.

After slipping and sliding down the pathway to the river, students calculated the speed of the water and noted the difference in water speed in the middle of the Sava by watching the ducks drifting leisurely along.

The four groups then split up to walk down a section of Knez Mihailova and Uzun Mirkova to count types of retail outlets for a graph, before meeting up for the second traffic count at Kalemegdan.

Our final destination was Hajd Park for a transverse section, to sample the trees in an area and to use the clinometers to measure the height of two sculptures.

There are other skills that should be introduced to the students and we hope to incorporate these in another field trip later in the academic year.
