On Wednesday 4th April 2012 the Year class of the BIS Primary school visited the Agricultural Secondary school to learn more about plants following a Science topic on HOW PLANTS GROW.

A teacher from the school took the children on a guided tour of the school. The children visited the green houses, learnt about the different parts of a plant, had question and answer sessions about why plants are important, visited the school orchard and vine yard and had a chance to plant their own plants to take home with them. The children were incredibly enthusiastic, and asked many questions, meet some of the students who helped then pot the plants and ended in the school library where they gave a gift of a book about gardens in Britain to the school to say thank you for the visit.

The children were invited to return in the autumn to help pick some apples from the apple orchard and to see how some of the plants had grown that were housed in the green houses. This was a very successful trip and thoroughly enjoyed by children and staff alike.

On Wednesday 28th March 2012 Year 3 and Year 6 of the BIS Primary School visited the Picasso at the Cote d鈥橝zur exhibition at the ‘Beko’ Building in Belgrade. The two classes were given a guided tour of the exhibition. The children were shown the ceramic sculptures and silver plates and coins that Picasso made in the 1960s while visiting the Cote D鈥橝zur in France. The guide showed the children different parts of the exhibition and gave detailed accounts of each piece of work. The children asked questions and heard many anecdotes about Picasso and his life.

The children were free to explore the exhibition; looking at each piece in their own time, drawing sketches, asking questions and reading all the information available. All the children enjoyed the visit very much and many said they would like to visit again with their parents.

The week of 2 鈥 6 March was on in which virtually every BIS student (and several teachers!) once again took part in the international event, World Education Games. Split into 3 competitions, World Spelling Day, World Maths Day and World Science Day our students competed against thousands of others throughout the world.

In total during this week around 360,000,000 questions were answered correctly by students. BIS played its part and there were some amazing results here in Belgrade with our students answering just under 200,000 questions correctly.

Our two top classes excelled finishing up on the world leader board twice each. Year 2 students (in the 4-7 year old category) were the 15th best class in World Science Day and 37th in World Spelling Day. Year 9 students (competing in the 14-18 year old category) were the 38th best class in World Spelling Day and 37th in World Science Day.

Individually 3 school members were within the top 100 for their category. In World Science Day Louise M came 56th, and Miss Asja came 55th in the Teachers category. Another BIS teacher who took part, Mrs Lambert, a well-renowned scrabble expert, came 6th in the world in the World Spelling Day teacher鈥檚 category.

We celebrated the success of the Primary students when during their normal weekly assembly time the whole assembly was given over to celebrating their achievements. It took two Year 1 volunteers to carry all the certificates that were to be presented into the hall.

There were so many certificates that having asked the students how many hours they wanted the assembly to take they decided that it was probably better just to give out the Amethyst, Sapphire and Ruby ones in assembly and for their class teachers to give out the participation certificates.

A special assembly was also held for the Secondary students where those receiving the top participation awards collected them from the Principal, including 2 for our top students, Victoria L and Marija M, who between them answered just over 7,000 questions.

Well done to all! We look forward to the event in 2013.

BIS Student Council has organized an amazing and fantastic Valentine鈥檚 Day party in the school鈥檚 premises, that no one wanted to miss.

Entrance was free, everyone was invited and the only requirement was to wear something red. Red and white balloons were all over the place. There was a light-show, loud music, food and drinks and colourful cards that students sent to their favourite teachers and friends. Each card was unique so everyone felt special. Milica (Year 9/2) got 17 cards and won the cake.

Students also prepared a very effective program: they sang and danced and got them all involved.

After the inaugural (hopefully annual) International Football Tournament was over with, we could conclude that it was a great success. Not only for the fact that our boys came third (with the top 3 teams separated by goal difference only), but also for the fact that it was very well organized by our hosts the Russian School with very little oversight.

Our team battled well 鈥 even after some setbacks such as injuries of some key players; they gave all they have in every game, and in the end, only one goal separated us from winning the tournament.

More importantly, this tournament was a nice manifestation, which allowed students from different international schools to compete against each other in fair and spirited environment. It allowed students from different spheres to co-work, act like a team and feel the sense of accomplishment in the end.

糖心原创 Student Council organized the Halloween Party for Secondary school students and their guests on Friday, November 4th in Smetanina 12. There was great participation from all secondary students who provided a wonderful evening for their relatives and guests. It was an exciting and well attended event…decorations, prizes, food, fun!

Everyone took part in preparations. It was a busy week for all of them.

Some students drew and cut up bats, witches, ghosts, others carved pumpkins, wrote scary warnings and messages on mirrors and entrance door, put spider webs on the ceilings. Some of them were in charge of choosing music, some of taking furniture out. One group decorated the school and installed the music equipment and projector for really scary power point presentation.

There were many ghosts, goblins, witches, super heroes, celebrities, devils, angels and more as the BIS students paraded around the school on Friday evening. Teachers and students alike enjoyed trying to guess who was who as many costumes gave no clues as to the owner. Well done, everyone!

Three best costumes were awarded by a big applause and the Principal delivered the prizes to the winners: a book of scary stories with special drawings done by Una, a big jar full of candies and a T-shirt.

After that, everyone got a piece of a fantastic chocolate cake which came in a shape of a big orange pumpkin, kindly donated by Mrs Jojic.

Then the dancing began. It was an amazing sight; all those unearthly beings swaying in a rhythm of the music, lit only by candle lights. Scary indeed.

Congratulations to the BIS Student Council for this worthwhile event that everybody enjoyed so much.

For many years 糖心原创 has believed that students should be exposed to a variety of cultures. What better a way to do that than to travel?

In the past there have been trips to Greece, France, Italy, Tunisia, Cyprus, Egypt, Portugal, Sicily and Northern Spain.

This autumn BIS students took a trip to Spain and visited Madrid and Andalusia. It was an eye-opening experience that enabled them to get a colourful and comprehensive view of Spain.

The group of 29 students and three teachers began their journey in Madrid, proceeded to Escorial, visited Toledo, La Mancha, Cordoba, Sevilla, Jeres, Cadis, Marbella, Malaga and finally Granada.

Included in the trips were excursions to the Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum where they admired Picasso’s famous painting 鈥淕uernica鈥, Columbus’s Tomb, bull fighting arena and Santiago Bernab茅u Stadium.

They discovered one of the modern wonders of the world at El Escorial and in Cordoba 聽they saw the Great Mosque of Cordoba and the Cathedral, took a tour of the Old City, which included the Synagogue, Alcazar and the Jewish Quarter.

Students took a lot of photos in front of the windmills Don Quichote fought, in La Mancha and spent one afternoon at the beach in Marbella.

In Granada they took part in a walking tour of the vast palace complex of the Alhambra, whose name derives from the Arabic al-Hamra, the 鈥榬ed fortress鈥.

They enjoyed watching flamenco puro which in Cal贸 language (the language of the Spanish Gypsy) means old, antique, and hence traditional.

They explored the unforgettable sights, and flavours of a traditional tapas meal, paella and churros with chocolate. It was an unforgettable trip for us all.

As one of the students said: 鈥淕reat culture, loved walking all day and I learned so much. Truly an eye-opening experience.鈥

After an exciting first day back, the staff were on then hand to enjoy and discuss issues with parents topics at our annual Welcome BBQ. In the lovely surroundings of our Primary School, on a warm afternoon, everyone present enjoyed both a range of hors d’ouvers as well as some delicious BBQ food. It was a great way to end the first day of school for the staff, and an excellent informal opportunity for new parents and new staff especially to meet.
