On 21st May BIS held its traditional Spring Charity Bazaar. This year the proceeds of the Bazaar were dedicated to the people of Japan who have suffered the consequences of the recent earthquake and tsunami. The guest of Honour on this occasion was Dr Akira Yamami, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan.

Numerous visitors enjoyed the flavour of international cuisines, and the colourfulness of various items displayed by a number of embassies, companies and individuals. The peak of the event, like every other year, was raffle with valuable prizes such as one week holiday in Greece, a long weekend in Kopaonik, beauty treatments in spa centres, etc. Our parental community made an effort by donating items for baskets with different themes.

This year our Primary students once again took part in the World Maths Day contest (March 1 and 2), competing against students from many countries throughout the world. Our students helped in the world total of nearly 428 million arithmetical questions being answered in the 48 hours the contest was live.

This year was also the inaugural World Spelling Day contest (March 3 and 4). For the first time students had to spell words, as well as correctly identify spelt words. Again this was against the clock, and against students throughout the world. In total there were over 52 million correctly answered questions in this contest.

Our top student in the World Maths Day was Andrej in Year 5 with 4,362 correct answers.

Our top student in the World Spelling Day was Cameron in Year 4 with 3,325 correct answers.

At our Award ceremony we presented many students with their Platinum Certificates for both World Maths and World Spelling Day. These students had played a minimum of 60 games.

Congratulations to all our partaking students, and we hope that they will use this to aid their learning in all subjects.

This year, in association with Mark Pullen, Academy Director of Ragbi Akademija Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade RFLC), and a few of his colleagues, our students from KS3 and KS4 had the opportunity to enjoy a couple of rugby presentation during their PE lessons.

Ivica Djordjevic, Zeljko Delic, Dusan Radovan alongside Mark showed students different elements of the game of rugby which built up to a game of touch rugby at the end of the lesson in which all students participated. Through 鈥榩lay-the-ball鈥, 鈥榙raw & pass鈥 and both shape drills for the attack formation and defensive line, students got to know a bit more about rugby and its essence.

Lessons turned out to be great success as both students and the professional rugby players seemed to enjoy and have a good time.

Our thanks to all from the Academy and with some of the students showing great talent and interest for the game, who knows, maybe we will have the opportunity to watch one of our very own in one of the rugby leagues in the near future!

Thursday 17th December was a particularly important day for Secondary students of the 糖心原创 in Belgrade. They held their annual Christmas assembly which turn to be a great success.

Parents, teachers, Management, Primary students and friends, were all invited to enjoy watching our students acting in sketches, singing and playing various instruments, dancing dressed in colourful Mexican national costumes with sombreros and red ribbons. They recited poems in English, German and French, and shared their talents in composing songs. It was a splendid afternoon and great experience. No wonder they got a big applause in the end.

After the show, the celebration continued in the Assembly Hall where the soft drinks and snacks were served.

December is always a busy months in our school. Everybody studies hard for the end of term tests. Knowing how much effort they had to put both into studying and rehearsing for the show, we all went home proud of our students’ achievements.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

On the 14th of December 2010 the Primary School held their annual Christmas production. This year鈥檚 performance was based on the story of Snow White. The show was a fusion of a pantomime, modern pop musical and a dance festival. The production took place once again at the African Museum. An amazing three hundred people attended which matched the largest number in the history of the school.

Every child in the Primary School had a part in Snow White and in total seventy-three costumes were required. As you can see from the pictures opposite the costumes were superbly designed. All performed outstandingly, but special mention should be made of the Evil Queen (Lana) and Snow White (Darija).

Many thanks must go to the staff of the school who worked vigorously to ensure the show was an astonishing success, the parents for creating the breathtaking wardrobe and the students who put so much work into their performances.

Immediately after the performance some parents expressed these views;

鈥淭he show left me speechless it was so perfect鈥.

鈥淚 was so proud of my child鈥.

鈥淓very year the play gets better and better鈥.

鈥淚t was beautiful鈥.

As an extended writing exercise Year 6 wrote some recounts in the 鈥楲iteracy Time鈥 on their thoughts about the play;

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want the play to finish, I wanted Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to last forever鈥. (Milica)

鈥淭he show finished my year with a great memory that will last forever鈥. (Aleksej)

鈥淒oing the play took my breath away it was that exciting鈥. (Ferenc)

鈥漌hen the dwarfs said their lines the audience laughed like one hundred hyenas鈥. (Marilyn)

BIS Secondary School 2010 Study Tour to Sicily J.W. Goethe wrote in his 鈥淛ourney to Italy鈥, 鈥淭o have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to have not seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.” So this year鈥檚 destination for the annual BIS Study Tour was Sicily.

We stayed in Cefalu, a charming town on the Sicilian mainland, and the first town we visited was Monreale. We liked what we saw of Monreale 鈥 the church, the cloisters. The Duomo was gorgeous and there is a lovely square just next to it. We had lunch in a comfortably shaded little restaurant. There we tried famous Sicilian ice cream and cannolis. The cannolis are really amazing, as they should be, since it is a specialty of the area. One student was suspicious on hearing that the filling is made of ricotta cheese, but loved it. A minute later everybody was eating cannolis.

Then we went to Palermo, the capital of Sicily. Many great films had been shot there, including “The Godfather”. We visited the locations where the scenes were filmed. Just outside Palermo in the village of Corleone is the Museo Anti-Mafia. This museum鈥檚 exhibits depict the Mafia鈥檚 horrific deeds throughout history and helps people understand the dangers of organized crime. That night senior students organized a party in one of the rooms. Thankfully the hotel staff were friendly and helpful.

Next day we visited Erice the medieval town on the top of the hill that has been inhabited since pre-history. It was like Disneyworld only real. We tasted some local foods such as almond-bases candies, pistachio liqueurs, cheeses, and Marsalis wine. The wind was blowing, it was raining heavily, it was a long walk up and down the somewhat steep and slippery streets, but no one seemed to care. We bought souvenirs and marzipan treats in La Pasticceria di Maria Grammatico, a world-famous sweet shop.

One whole day was dedicated to Aeolian Islands. There are 7 of them and they are all very different. So we sailed for our first Aeolian Island, Lipari. It took us two hours to get there. The sea was rough, and those who were below deck, bouncing in rough seas, felt seasick. From the harbour of Marina Corta we went to visit the archaeological museum, the 19th century Cathedrale di San Bartolomeo and the amphitheatre.

We also had some free time and walked around the town and did some shopping, took lots of photos, had a bite to eat, and really did not feel rushed. We have seen thistle, cactus, palm trees, daisies, yucca, agave and eucalyptus trees that day.

The boat then moved on to Vulcano, the second largest of the Aeolian Islands, where we anchored for the afternoon. Half of the group went to the black sand volcanic beach; another half climbed the hill to explore the Valley of Monsters. We met a Serbian lady who fell in love with this unique and intriguing island years ago. She even bought a house there. It was a great experience though the pervading rotten-egg stink of sulphur stayed on our clothes for a couple of days afterwards.

Another town we visited was Agrigento, which is graced with the finest collection of Greek temples in the world, called, oddly, The Valley of the Temples (5th century BC). We were where Pirandello was born and Aeschylus died.

In the evening we came to Giardini Naxos. We stayed in the hotel that was immediately by the sea. We spent the evening on the beach. The boys played football, and the girls cheered. We were all excited that night before visiting Mt Etna. 鈥業magine, we can walk up a volcano and descend into the crater. Is it safe, Miss?鈥 one student asked.

The weather was not good, it was cloudy and raining, but our guide assured us it was different on Etna. And he was right. We headed to the world鈥檚 most continuously active volcano, twice the height of everything else. In the beginning it was quite cloudy so the view was poor. The higher we went, the more crooked the road became. There were so many turns on the road it almost seemed like you were doing figure eights. Around one curve, there was an old stone house, shingled roof, with part of a house still underneath. It was obvious that this house was caught sleeping during the lava eruption.

At one moment Etna permitted us to take a good look around. The fog lifted, the sky cleared and the view from Etna was breath-taking. Looking down from the 2000 meters you can see all the cities and villages, seas, Calabria and the Aeolian Islands. It was like looking down from the top of the world. The sight of a souvenir shop up here seemed so unreal – who would come up here every day and work in this shop watching the puffing of smoke so close to the summit nearby? In front of the souvenir shop we spotted thousands of ladybirds. The guide explained that they come here every October to die. It was unreal to see these tiny red spots scattered on black rocks. The souvenir shop offered some firewater called “Fogo de Etna” and a delicious hot chocolate. We bought lots of lava-made products and then went to inspect the extinct crater.

We ended our visit at Taormina which was a charming town, where we had lunch and visited the Amphitheatre. Again, there were spectacular views from there and we were even able to see Italian coast afar. Upon arrival there we immediately saw the difference between the east and west coast of Sicily. The east coast seemed much more developed and colourful. It was here, in romantic Taormina, that a self-exiled D.H. Lawrence was inspired to write Lady Chatterley鈥檚 Lover.

Next morning we went to visit Siracusa. We had a walking tour of the town and the Greek theatre. The theatre was spectacular and the best preserved in Sicily. We visited Ortigia, which is the historic section. The Piazzo Duomo is lovely. The Duomo itself still has the columns from the ancient Greek temple it was built on. We spent a day at the Archaeological Park and Museum, walking among the almost intact Greek theatre and the echo cavern and beautiful park. In the park there was the funnel-shaped Ear of Dionysius. The echoes were tremendous. One of our students with a fabulous voice started singing while we were inside it.

Then, way too soon, it was time to leave and fly out of Catania back to Serbia. Our wonderful trip to Sicily was over. We came away feeling that we would like very much to return to Sicily with time on our hands to have a chance to experience more of this beautiful country and its people; and above all, to spend time together and collect wonderful memories and anecdotes.

On Friday, 24th September Year 4 went to Kalemegdan castle on a beautiful sunny and warm day. The purpose of the visit was to follow a time line of weapons through the ages. In class we are studying the Roman period so a visit of this type dove tailed into the curriculum.

We started the tour at the bottom of the castle were we examined the Roman replica weapons. The class pretended to be the Roman legion that was garrisoned in Belgrade in those days. We practiced marching as a Roman brigade and found logs to sit on to enjoy our mid-morning snack

Next we went up into the castle to see a statue of a medieval knight and then walked to an 18th century cannon. Near by there was an ice cream seller and the pupils enjoyed buying an ice cream. They enjoyed eating it even more!

The last part of the tour was to see the weapons of the 20th century. The children were able to see tanks, artillery, and various sorts of devices to blow things up.

To help them see the development of weaponry each child had an eye-spy sheet on which were pictures of the weapons they had to find.

A great day out had been enjoyed by Year 4 pupils.

Mr Ferguson
