On the 12th of June the BIS said goodbye to the 13th generation of its graduation students. According to the school鈥檚 long-standing tradition, the Graduation Ceremony took place at the 鈥淰ila Jelena鈥 business club.

Our graduates this year have been accepted to a number of universities in the UK, US, Switzerland and Serbia. The recipient of the prestigious European Council of International Schools (ECIS) Award for International Understanding this year was Anita M.

The large 鈥淰ila Jelena鈥 hall was beautifully decorated; there was excellent food and music entertainment. The guest of honour this year was Mr. Gerhard Steubl, Secretary of the Administrative Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.

We wish the graduating Class of 2010 all the best for their university studies, and their future lives.

On Saturday, 22nd May the BIS school community together with numerous visitors enjoyed our school鈥檚 traditional Spring Charity Bazaar. The proceeds of the Bazaar this year went to the 鈥淜remen鈥 horse riding club from Pancevo which specialises in hippo therapy for children with special needs. Despite the weather forecast, we had a beautiful sunny day, and everyone enjoyed themselves in the shade of the trees at our Primary campus in Uzicka.

This year the Bazaar had more participants than ever, and the youngest children enjoyed the fun of a bouncy castle which was provided by Pro Credit Bank.

The entertainment was also more varied and more interesting than ever before. The Malaysian Embassy culture group in their colourful costumes presented us with an appealing set of Malaysian dances. The Capoeira group which has traditionally been present at our Bazaars was there this time as well, and some of the BIS students learning Capueira had the opportunity to show their skills. This year, for the first time, we had the pleasure of hosting the 鈥淎brasevic鈥 culture group with sixty dancers split into three age groups 鈥 children, teenagers, and adults. Each age group was in a different costume featuring three different parts of Serbia. Their Serbian folk dances, accompanied by a music orchestra were a real joy for the visitors.

The peak of the event, of course, was the raffle. In addition to numerous baskets, and toys which were donated by courtesy of BIS parents and Pro Credit bank, as well as numerous other prizes, we had carton boxes of apples donated by Golden Garden from Subotica, a Branch for two persons donated by Hyatt hotel, seven days at a villa in Hvar Croatia donated by Mrs. and Mr. Sorensen, and seven days in Pefkohori Greece donated by Mrs. and Mr. Vukovic from Sim Tours.

I would like to thank all members of our school community as well as the representatives of various companies who took the time and effort to make our 2010 Spring Charity Bazaar a success.

BIS Primary School Fundraiser for Haiti

On a gloriously sunny afternoon on the 26th March Primary School set out their tables filled with old toys, games and scrumptious food to sell to their friends and raise money for Haiti orphanages.

Mrs Goodstein, a Primary parent with Haiti connections, had come into school the week before to tell us about the pitiful conditions in Haiti following a huge earthquake there in February. We were all keen to help. We painted pictures for the Krik? Krak! Exhibition and then organised our sale.

A big thank you to all the staff and parents who supported the event by donating cakes and coming on the day to share in the fun.

Mrs Goodstein was afterwards thrilled to receive a cheque for RSD 30,000 in a special Primary assembly.

The Primary school visited the Dinosaur Exhibition called 鈥楪iants of Patagonia鈥 on Tuesday 9th March. The school had a guided tour of the exhibition in English, where they could look at fossilised dinosaur eggs, models of different dinosaurs, skeletons and take part in a number of interactive games and activities.

All the children from the Reception up to year 5 found the trip interesting and asked many questions in relation to what they had seen and heard. They were able to see like an herbivore, take footsteps like a T-Rex, sit inside a dinosaur egg and complete jigsaws and pictures of all the dinosaurs seen at the museum.

It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

To celebrate the International event the children and teachers of the primary school had a book themed day. Every one got into the event by dressing up as their favourite character from a book. Costumes ranged from Sherlock Holmes, to Spider Man to Tinker Bell and the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The afternoon activities were dedicated to 鈥楤ook Workshops鈥 catering for different year groups and different styles of writing. The children enjoyed listening to fairy tales on CD, read books by Dr. Seuss & Roald Dahl, find out about detective stories and aliens who wore underpants (!!) as well as participating in a Literacy Treasure Hunt.

All in all the day was a great successful and another event that the children will remember.

Newsreport

World Maths Day took place at BIS from Tue 2 March until Thu 4 March. Our students answered over 350,000 questions and our teachers 60,000 mathematical questions correctly during this event.

BIS was part of an truly international event, and helped to achieve a world record breaking 479,000,000 questions and was one of 56,082 schools that took part.

The students and staff whole-heartedly enjoyed playing against other students and staff from so many different countries in this live competition.

Celebration Assembly Report

This year, once again, the 糖心原创 played its part in the success of World Maths Day, an international arithmetic challenge. We were one of the 56,082 school taking part, from 235 countries, with our students making up part of over 1.1 million that took part in this 48 hour competition.

With certificates for taking part being given out during the school week, those who had achieved over 4,000 correct answers had to wait until Friday afternoon for the presentation of their Gold Certificates. Mr Vicente Muanda, Charg茅 d鈥檃ffaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Angola was our guest of honour.

Two assemblies were held, one at our new Primary campus, and the other at our Secondary campus. With all the students assembled they were first given a presentation showing the figures for the school and the world, and were impressed to know that they had been part of breaking a World Record. Those students who had attained gold, were then presented with their certificates by Mr Muanda. Three students were in addition presented with trophies for having the top scores in the school.

Our champion for 2010, Vayaya (from Angola), scored over 13,300 points. In second place was Moe (from Japan), and in third was Denis (from Serbia). A truly international result for an international competition.

It was also great to see that 20 of our teachers took part in the event, with two of them finishing in the Top 100 Teachers/Parents category. Mr Muanda had a special prize for Miss Stankovi膰 who did so well and was our top teacher for 2010.

We will build on this and our students look forward to the events in 2011.

Parents, teachers, students and friends of BIS braved the arctic conditions on a cold February evening to witness a truly breathtaking show of talent from the students. An evening of high quality entertainment in the regal setting of the primary school in Uzicka was promised and the students did not let us down.

The audience were entertained in the intimate surroundings by a variety of acts, many who had gone through painstaking rehearsals and auditions. Classical musical performances, comedy, dance, Shakespeare, rock, pop and rap all featured throughout the evening to give the whole performance a truly international flavour.

The evening concluded with an impromptu finale by the whole cast. The show was dedicated to the Haiti earthquake appeal and the audience showed their appreciation and generosity with their donations.

The show was a resounding success for all concerned and will be a regular feature on the school calendar in future proving very much that BIS students really do have Talent!

As part of their study of the History of Flight the students from Year 3 made their long awaited visit to this special museum.聽The museum, a huge glass dome, has a huge variety of machines which we鈥檇 only seen so far in books and on the computer. We saw early bi-planes with bicycle wheels, gliders, warplanes, helicopters, jets and even an early simulator!

The oldest machine we saw was 100 years old this year. It was a wooden propeller machine with a basket seat for the pilot! The newest was an Eagle jet.

As a final treat, Dan let the children sit in the cockpit of one of the airplanes and move the joystick and rudders.

The trip was altogether interesting with something for everyone to enjoy.

On the 15th of December 2009 the Primary School held their annual Christmas production. This year鈥檚 performance was based on the story of Aladdin. The show was a fusion of a pantomime, modern pop musical and a dance festival. The production took place once again at the African Museum. An amazing three hundred people attended which was the largest number in the history of the school.

Every child in the Primary School had a part in Aladdin and in total seventy-six costumes were required. As you can see from the pictures in this newsletter the costumes were superbly designed and very colourful.

Immediately after the performance some parents expressed these views:

鈥淭he show was spectacular鈥.

鈥淭he songs were amazing鈥.

鈥淭he play was fantastic and the actors did great and the costumes were smashing鈥.

鈥淚t was magnificent鈥.

As an extended writing exercise Year 6 wrote some recounts in the 鈥楲iteracy Hour鈥 on their thoughts about the play;

鈥淢y favourite part of the show was when the Genies came out to do their song and dance, which was fantastic鈥. (Katia)

鈥淲hen the show finished three hundred people clapped like a lion鈥檚 roar鈥. (Moe)

鈥淭he play went incredibly indescribably inspirationally well鈥. (Aleksander)

鈥淥n the big day the children worked harder than ever鈥. (Natasha)

Thank you, to all the staff and parents who put so much effort to make this year鈥檚 show the best ever. The DVD of the production is available to buy now at the price of 1000 dinars per copy.

What will be the theme of next Primary School Christmas Production? You will have to wait until next year to find out.
