On 13th June this year the BIS said goodbye to the 11th generation of its graduating students. The Graduation Ceremony took place at Vila Jelena Business Club. We were happy to host this year’s guest of honour, Mr. Pietro Sardi, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Belgrade.

After the opening speech by Ms. Keserovic, the graduates and other guests were addressed by Mr. Sardi, who evoked the memories of his own graduation, and shared his view as to what graduation means in the life of a young person. The guests were then greeted by Mr. Howie who said goodbye to everyone after 2 years of his excellent service as the BIS Deputy Principal.

In addition to the 14 graduation certificates, there were also 2 special awards to be presented to our students. The traditional ECIS Award for International Understanding went to George for his contribution in bringing together the BIS students of different nationalities. The Jonathan Rider Award for Academic Excellence went to Sonja whose dedication to acquiring knowledge secured her a place at Berkeley University CA, USA.

The official Ceremony was followed by diner with music, and everyone truly enjoyed the evening.

We congratulate the Graduating Class of 2008 who have worked hard enough to enter into universities worldwide.

On 3rd June this year the efforts of our students who had worked hard towards fulfilling the requirements for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards were crowned by the official Award Ceremony at the White Palace in Belgrade.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award was established in 1953 by HRH Prince Phillip, and a German educationalist Kurt Hahn. The idea behind the Award scheme is to help young people develop a sport or hobby, and discover what they really stand for and what they can do. There are three levels of attainment: Bronze, Silver and Gold. While the Bronze and Silver Awards are presented to students locally, the Gold Award is presented to its winners at the Buckingham Palace.

The BIS is a sole Balkans operator for this prestigious Award, which is highly valued by its recipients’ future universities, as well as by their future employers. This year, for the first time in the school’s history, we had 2 students attaining Silver, while 7 of them attained Bronze. In the absence of HRH Prince Aleksandar and Princess Katarina Karadjordjevic, the BIS students received their Duke of Edinburgh Awards from Mr. Dragan Acovic, Member of the Privy Council. The Award Ceremony was followed by a tour of the White Palace.

On Tuesday 13th November Key Stage 1 went to the main Fire Station in Belgrade. The children enjoyed the experience very much as they were able to see all aspects of the Fireman’s life at the station and went up in the lift on one of the fire engines to the top of the building. It was very high! They were also taken out in groups in one of the fire engines. It was driven around Belgrade with its sirens working and then it was even driven through red traffic lights!

The children were allowed to try on the fireman’s uniform and helmets and got to see the control room, their canteen, classroom, the fitness area, control room and where they sleep when they are on duty.

The whole experience was a positive one, the children had a great time and learnt lots and I even think the Firemen enjoyed it too!

If parents want to see more about our trip the children in Key Stage 1 have created a very interesting and informative display in the Primary School.

And where would the Fire Brigade be without water?

In fact, where would any of us be without water?

Water’ is the current Year 5 Geography topic and we have discovered a few interesting facts: Do you know that we use approximately 170 litres of water each a day? Do you know that water flows through the Belgrade city water pipes at a rate of 11,000 litres per second? Do you know that the people of Belgrade would have just one and a half days of water in their taps were something seriously wrong to happen to the city’s water supply?

We found this out on a cold, grey Friday when we traveled along the Sava River to Makiš, the largest water treatment plant for the Sava Riverwater. Makiš is huge!

After a technical lecture on the many stages in the process of water purification, we visited the canteen for refreshing juice.

We then made a tour of some of the enormous buildings which house the water cleansing machinery. What a noise those giant pumps make! We climbed up and down staircases and past large pools and deep wells of water. We were surprised to find ourselves walking past piles of sand and were told that water is filtered through a metre of sand in one stage of the process. By the time we had finished we appreciated the effort and expense needed to maintain clean water for us all. Our next focus is to find out how we can conserve water.

On Friday, 19th October, BIS had the pleasure of hosting Ms. Boer Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe who, with a delegation from the Council of Europe, visited our school as part of her visit to Belgrade.

This event was preceded by the participation of BIS Primary students at the European Flag Raising Celebration in front of the Serbian Parliament, where our students sang in front of a large public audience.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank the delegation of the Council of Europe headed by Ms. Buquicchio for bringing presents to our students on the occasion of their visit to BIS.

Today we visited the Aviation Museum at Belgrade Airport. We saw many jet planes, fighters, gliders and bombs. We arrived about 9:30 am after traveling along a congested road.

At the museum the doors opened and we were greeted by a lady who was kind enough to take us through the exhibition. Our first stop was in the cinema where we watched a film of acrobatic aircraft which lasted about 10 minutes. Next we walked upstairs to see a collection of aircraft from all over the world.

The first plane we saw was made of wood and was 117 years old. Then we were shown biplanes from the First World War and other types of craft from the Second World War. Some of these planes had propellers and others had jet engines. There were gliders and parachutes and helicopters.

At one exhibit there was the tail section of an F17 American fighter plane which had been shot down in 1999 over Belgrade.

There were many other things to see including weapons both on the planes and as a show of their own. One plane had been designed for the children to sit in. The exhibits were interesting but there should have been some kind of brochure to provide information.
