On 13th June the BIS celebrated its 10th anniversary at the City Hall of Belgrade. The Guest of Honour on this special occasion was H.E. Mr. Hans Ola Urstad, Ambassador of OSCE. We were happy to host a large number of guests including parents and other representatives of the Corps diplomatique in Belgrade.

The highlight of the celebration was the Graduation Ceremony where H.E. Mr. Urstad presented graduation certificates to the 10th generation of BIS students. These students will now move from BIS into universities througout the world.

The celebration was followed by a cocktail party. We all enjoyed the evening and were proud of our school’s and the graduates accomplishments.

On Saturday 12th May if you had been at Belgrade鈥檚 main train station you would have seen two teachers and two students from BIS board the overnight train heading for Bucharest. We were off to the 5th InfoMatrix International Computer Exhibition/Competition [www.infomatrix.ro]. Thirteen hours later we gratefully descended from the sleeping carriage (not having had too much sleep) but eager to get things ready for the public and the judges to view the students work on Monday and Tuesday.

Alongside students from as far afield as Mexico, South Africa and Mongolia we set up a professional display at the prestigious Law Department building of Bucharest University, along with the other twenty stands competing in the High School Computer Art section, and around eighty stands altogether.

The BIS students, Alex and Dejan, 聽had produced for the competition a 3D project in Maya entitled 鈥淚nterior鈥, depicting the inside of an apartment they had once seen in Tunisia. Whilst this work looked simple, to make it look simple had taken many months of hard work in the after-school Maya club BIS runs.

From 9 until 6 on Monday and Tuesday our students had a stream of both school and university聽 students as well as other members of the public coming to talk to them about their work. During this time they also had Computer Art judges; all professionals in this field visit them to assess the quality of their stand.

Just before lunch on Tuesday the two students were summoned for a viva with the judges. They first showed a one-minute film of their work created whilst they were preparing things at BIS, followed by a five minute live demonstration of how they created their scene, and then five minutes of questioning by the judges. At the end the students were relieved to get to lunch!

On the Wednesday in the modern central hall of the Law Department the Rector of the Bucharest University honoured the BIS students by presenting them with Silver Medals for their work. An excellent achievement for our students.

We survived the train journey home and the following day in a special assembly all the students at BIS congratulated Alex and Dejan on their wonderful achievement.

It must be said that the organisation and hospitality that the Lumina Education group (running the International School of Bucharest [www.isb.ro] and the International Computer High School of Bucharest [www.ichb.ro]) showed us was exemplary and we look forward to participating in this event in the future.

The latest big event that we can be proud of was the Spring Charity Bazaar, which took place on the 5th of May at BIS school yard. This time, the charity of our choice was the 鈥淗omework for All鈥 campaign initiated by the President of Serbia鈥檚 National Office. The purpose of this charity is to raise funds for building school toilets in rural parts of Serbia, thus helping to improve the schooling conditions for children living in the targeted areas. Our special guests on the occasion of the Spring Bazaar were five representatives from the National Office, led by the Deputy Director, Mr. Branko Jankovi膰.

Everyone had great fun enjoying national dishes of Egypt, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Germany Russia, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece and Serbia. Some stalls were featuring African and Asian jewelry. As usual, our aim was to provide as much entertainment for children as possible. There was a clown in full costume playing various games with our youngest students and visitors. The Egg Hunt was organised in the Primary School, and children could enjoy playing Darts and Ball Throw, as well as riding a pony on the grass patch of the school yard. Everyone present could relish in the taste of New Zealand barbecue prepared by Mr. Rose. Like the previous ones, Spring Charity Bazaar 2007 was covered by local media. We are sure that our future Bazaars will be ever bigger and more successful.

At the tournament, which was held in April 2007, BIS players lost a football match against “Milutin Milankovic” 7:4.

In the first half BIS players were able to meet all challenges presented to them resulting in scoring 4 goals. In the second half BIS players however ran out聽of steam resulting in a drop in their efficiency and the dominance they had had in the first half.

We congratulate BIS players who struggled hard throughout the match and achieved as good a result as they could.
